Club 27 Musicians Who have Died from the ‘Curse’

Club 27 Members

We all know their names, and unfortunately most have heard of the infamous “27” curse. Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse and Jim Morrison- all died at age 27 and with serious drug and alcohol problems.

The “27 curse” began in 1970 when drug and alcohol addiction took the legendary guitar playing Jimi Hendrix and songwriter Janis Joplin. Both having heroin addictions, Janis Joplin met her fate when she overdosed on heroin and alcohol. Jimi Hendrix, however, took a total of 9 sleeping pills then later choked on his own vomit- in turn starting the dreadful “club 27”. Then we have the Doors frontman, Jim Morrison, who had an addiction to LSD, Mescaline, Cannabis, and Cocaine. However, he overdosed on heroin at that grim age of 27 just a year later in 1971.

There was a great pause in the 27 curse, until 23 years later, Kurt Cobain took a gunshot to his head whilst having traces of heroin and valium in his body. The lead singer and guitarist unfortunately could not escape the curse. Once again, heroin being a culprit in the unfortunate repeating events, another life was taken in 2011, Amy Winehouse. Miss Winehouse was a singer, songwriter who was taken from this world too early due to her alcohol addiction. Winehouse’s death was in 2011, and was the last of the 27 curse- as of now.

However, it’s not the age that’s doing these celebrities in- it’s the addiction. The hilarious Chris Farley unfortunately met his demise in 1997 due to a cocaine and heroin overdose when he was just 33 years old. Ironically, 15 years before Farley’s overdose, actor John Belushi also died of a cocaine and heroin overdose.

Whether it be heroin, alcohol, cocaine, or prescription drugs- addiction is real and can kill you. You also don’t have to be a celebrity to have a very serious addiction. According to the drug project and Journal of American Medical Association, 900,000 Americans die each year due to substance abuse, tobacco and alcohol. Don’t be the next to join “Club 27”, getting sober is living sober.

Jimi Hendrix was not a heroin user. There is not a single story from friends or fellow musicians that indicates he ever used it. When the autopsy was done following his death, the results indicated that there was no evidence of heroin use.

  2. Before people publish articles, it’s important to know the correct facts. Jim Morrison did not have an addiction to LSD, cocaine, Mesacaline or cannabis!!! Jim did have a drinking problem, but by all accounts was NOT a drug addict. He did not die of a drug overdose, it was heart failure. It is sickening how stories are continually fabricated with no regard to the facts. Jim deserves better. Journalism certainly has died.
