Abby and Brittany Hensel are 22-year old conjoined twins. The sisters share a body but have two heads, and where they are highly symmetric with the appearance of having a single body with normal proportion, they each have a separate heart, stomach and spinal cord. Each twin controls half of the body: Brittany controls the right, and Abbey controls the left. According to statistics, one set of twins in every 40,000 are conjoined, and only 1% survive past their first year of life.
According to the Daily Mail: “The Hensel girls are the rarest form of conjoined twins… they have two spines (which join at the pelvis), two hearts, two oesophagi, two stomachs, three kidneys, two gall bladders, four lungs (two of which are joined), one liver, one ribcage, a shared circulatory system and partially shared nervous systems. From the waist down, all organs, including the intestine, bladder and reproductive organs, are shared. Brittany – the left twin – can’t feel anything on the right side of the body and Abigail – the right twin – can’t feel anything on her left, instinctively their limbs move as if co-ordinated by one person, even when typing e-mails on the computer.”
They were born on March 1, 1990 in Minnesota. Their mother, Patty, was a registered nurse and their father, Mike, a carpenter and landscaper. When born doctors predicted they would not survive long enough to even go home with their parents. But here they are today.
The twins have appeared on television before back in 2006 when they appeared in “Joined for Life,” a TV documentary that showed on the Discovery Channel. They have also appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show”, the Learning Channel, and Time magazine back in 1996
Now that they have graduated from college, Abby and Brittany will star in their very own reality TV show. The show will be called “Abby and Brittany” and will follow the girls as they go job searching and travel through Europe. In the trailers the two seem very happy and exuberant, no different from any other young women.
In a preview the girls appear in their graduation caps and gowns, driving, sunbathing, and living life like any other recent high school graduate on their way to the real world. The show will premier on August 28, 2012 on TLC.
