Growing up, I was told by my parents to engage brain before my mouth. The times throughout my life where I said something before thinking it through usually made me regret it later. Athletes do the same when they tweet something without thinking first and usually end up apologizing for it afterwards. This was a lesson, unfortunately, Ryan Lochte’s mom learned the hard way when she said something about her superstar son and the phrase “one-night-stand.” This turned out to be an eye-opening experience for her and one she will never forget.
Ike, Lochte’s mother, originally said on NBC’s Today Thursday read: “He goes out on one-night stands. He’s not able to give fully to a relationship because he’s always on the go.” Ryan and Ike both clarified on Friday to USA TODAY Sports that they both knew she meant dates, not hookups. She said, “How innocent is that? All I wanted to say is that he’s so sensitive about not wanting to hurt a girl dating, so he just goes and dates and takes out a girl for maybe one or two dates and doesn’t have a relationship because he doesn’t have time and it’s not fair to the women.” She added, “I thought that was so sensitive, but then they turned it around. I’m not used to this. … What kind of mom is going to say that (about her son having one-night stands)? Especially being a mom and having two daughters.”
The fact that she has two daughters made her initial comments puzzling as well as flippant. Another thing to think about is how much detached is Ike from how one-night-stands are viewed by the general public. Despite this, Ryan and Ike quickly put the blame on the media for what was meant to be viewed as a compliment was turned around and painted the Lochte’s as being insensitive.
Ryan told USA Today that, “[Ike Lochte is] new to the whole media [experience], so she didn’t really understand that they were going to twist it and make it bad. She definitely was like, ‘Why would they do that?’ She is so oblivious to everything.” Ryan’s explanation does help explain the issue at hand but also opens up future ones that would bring attention to himself. After all, when you think about it, referring to your own mother as being “oblivious” isn’t the most considerate thing to do, either.
