Pastor Among Protesters Who Attended Kiss-In at Chick-fil-A Restaurants

Chick fil a Anti Gay

Most businesses and restaurants would jump at the chance for free publicity. With the millions of dollars spent on advertising, any free press would seem to be good. However, the free press those Chick-fil-A restaurants have been getting for the past few weeks have come with a price. Those who are protesting comments made by President and COO Dan Cathy have shown up to his fast-food restaurants nationwide to participate in Same-Sex Kiss Day. Protestors had ‘Kiss-Ins’ that elicited some major smooching around the country.

Same sex couples and allies came out and showed their support on Friday for marriage equality. It has been a controversy that has been focused on the fast-food restaurants President and COO, Dan Cathy, came out against gay marriage based, supposedly, on his Christian values: “I think we are inviting God’s judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at Him and say, ‘We know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage,’ and I pray God’s mercy on our generation that has such a prideful, arrogant attitude to think that we have the audacity to try and redefine what marriage is about.” While many share in Cathy’s beliefs, others strongly disagree with his views. Pastor Sarah Halverson is one who disagrees.

The Reverend showed her support for marriage equality on Friday by showing up in front of a local Chick-fil-A. She wore a clerical collar and had a rainbow colored sign that read: We Support The LGBT Community. A photograph is capturing a moment in time that can be looked upon and expressed in so many ways and words. The photo of the Reverend being kissed on the cheek by her secretary Cindy is one of those moments. Buzzing has been going on around the internet regarding the picture and Rev Halverson told The Huffingtonpost, “It was a powerful experience. I felt compelled to be there to stand as a compassionate loving voice for justice.”

According to the OC Weekly, Rev. Halverson is the Pastor of Fairview Community Church, which affiliated with the American Baptists and the United Church of Christ. The church is welcoming and inclusive of all people, including LGBT identified. In responding to remarks that were made by Dan Cathy, Rev. Halverson told the OC Weekly that “It’s heartbreakingly sad to see people using the Bible and Christian rhetoric to make people feel like they don’t belong in God’s House.”

Turnout appeared to be underwhelming across the country in comparing it to Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day. However, they still came out to express their displeasure at the restaurants, including some who showed up in Decatur, GA. The New York Times reports that about two dozen protestors gathered in Decatur, GA., which is near the company’s headquarters. They waved signs with slogans like “We’re here, we’re queer, and we’re not eating,” and “Eat Mor Equality.”

Though some may say the kiss-ins were a response to Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day, plans for the kiss-ins were created on a Facebook event, which showed more than 14,000 people listed as “Going” as of Saturday afternoon. The event site reads: “In honor of their support for love, equality, and the real definition of family, we’re holding a NATIONAL Same Sex Kiss Day at Chick Fil A’s around the country. So grab a friend (or 20) and head out to your nearest Chick Fil A! And don’t forget to post photos/videos of it here! For all the world to see!  We would also like to clarify that this event was NOT created as a response to Mike Huckabee’s appreciation day, this event was created on July 19, several days before Mike Huckabee announced his plans for Wednesday August 1.”

Chick-fil-A restaurants said they saw only mere dozens of kissers turn out, however, the organizers deemed the event a “HUGE success” and posted photos on their Facebook page.

Reverend Billy Graham To Support Chick-fil-A

The Reverend Billy Graham plans to show his support for traditional marriage by eating food from Chick-fil-A Wednesday. The president of the fast food chain sparked controversy earlier this month when he denounced gay marriage saying he supports the biblical definition of marriage as between a man and a woman. Wednesday is Chick-fil-A’s annual Customer Appreciation Day. Many supporters of same-sex marriage are calling for a boycott of Chick-fil-A. Those against gay marriage are asking people to eat at the restaurant to show their support.
