For ten years, Chad Ochocinco played for the Cincinnati Bengals and was considered a go-to player when needing someone to throw the ball to for most of them. Out of those ten years, seven of them saw Ochocinco break the thousand yard reception mark. His last year with them and the one year he played for the New England Patriots were not so kind as he was under a thousand yard receiving. Today, he has a wife, a last name that is not a number and a new team to play on.
Ochocinco, now Chad Johnson, is hoping the recent changes in his life will bring him back to the days where one thousand yards receiving was the norm for him. Though he has made several changes, he comments on the one that released his talent from being chained.
Many players would be happy to be signed by the New England Patriots. They are a very talented team and have the weapons to be a playoff contender every season. Coming off of a non-productive season with Cincinnati, Johnson ended up with the Patriots last season via a late July trade. Though the original contract was for three years that included a $4.5 million signing bonus and $1 million in base salary for 2011, his performance was not what New England had hoped it to be.
After an unsuccessful attempt to restructure his contract this offseason, the Patriots released him and ended up signing with the Miami Dolphins. This time, he feels he will have a productive season because he was restricted by the team in what he can do.
During a talk with the Miami Herald, Johnson felt that part of the reason for his lack of success was due to the team not allowing him to be himself. “I’m going back to my normal ways. My normal ways, when I was at my best, when I got fined, look at the production those years. Usually things don’t go right when you try to change the way you do things. I’m back to normal.” He also added, “My personality was controlled last year. You didn’t hear me at all last year. Zero. Zilch. When my mouth is running, it forces me to perform. It’s never been vindictive. I never got anybody in trouble. When I can be me, I am loose. Everything just flows for me, whether it’s the style of play, the way I learn.”
If Chad Johnson can get back to his normal ways with the Miami Dolphins, then the AFC East is about to become more competitive.
