Hope Solo Fails Drug Test

In a world saturated with athletes being linked with failed drug tests the various outcomes of these tests are what gains the media’s attention. The most prolonged and talked about drug testing issue has to be the Lance Armstrong he said she said case that has been in the media for years now.  It seems that most failed drug test cases are found heavily in Major League Baseball (MLB) and the National Football League (NFL), but not too many cases have been reported from the sport of soccer until now.

USA All-Star goalkeeper and international sensation Hope Solo has recently been reported for failing a mandatory drug and urine test before her team heads to London. The 30 year old Richland, Washington native received just a warning from the US Anti-Doping agency on Monday July 9, 2012. This was after knowing that she had tested positive for the banned substance Canrenone.

Solo has since voiced her opinion about the subject.

”I took a medication prescribed by my personal doctor for pre-menstrual purposes that I did not know contained a diuretic,” Solo said in a statement.

She went on to mention that once she was informed of the fact that it was a banned substance she immediately cooperated with the USADA and shared everything they needed to put a conclusion to the issue.

”I made an honest mistake, and the medication did not enhance my performance in any way.”

Mistake or not, Solo will still remain on the USA soccer team heading to the Olympics where she will look to continue her dominance. She exploded on the scene and made the world take even more notice of her during team USA’s run to the finals in the 2011 World Cup.  They eventually lost to Japan in Penalty kicks, but Hope Solo captured thousands of new USA soccer fans in the process. If you remember five years ago in the 2007  World Cup Solo was the young star studded  goalkeeper and fan favorite that had a huge part of leading the USA to the semi-finals. However the semi-finals is where controversy emerged and Solo’s historic quotes made national headlines, and still are talked about till this day.

Even though Solo lead the team to the semi-finals, then head coach Greg Ryan benched her for veteran, and world champion goalkeeper with the USA Briana Scurry.

The USA would go on to lose the game against Brazil 4-0 which prompted Solo to respond, a respond that got her kicked off the team.

”It was the wrong decision, and I think anybody that knows anything about the game knows that, I know there’s no doubt in my mind I would have made those saves you cant keep living in the past,” Solo said in a statement.

Ever since then Solo has been nothing short of amazing as she has become one of the top goalies in the world, and will look to lead team USA to Olympic gold in London.
