Free Slurpee Day 2012 at 7-Eleven from 11am to 7pm

7-Eleven Free Slurpee

Today is the day you can enjoy a free Slurpee from 7-Eleven. The promotion runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. today, Wednesday, July 11 as a celebration of 7-Eleven’s 85th birthday.

You can get a free 7.11-ounce Slurpee, while supplies last at your local 7-Eleven and the offer applies to any flavor you want. There are quite a few to choose from too: 7-Eleven boasts over 70 varieties. In addition to standbys like Cherry, Coca Cola, and Blue Raspberry, you can get Dr. Pepper, Peach Dragon Fruit, and something called “KZ3 Battle Fuel.”

The Slurpee from 7-Eleven was invented by accident in 1927 when the soda fountain founder put bottled soft drinks into the freezer. When customers started to crowd into the store to get the slushy cold drinks, Omar Knedlik approached the John E. Mitchell Company with the idea. That’s when the Icee Machine was invented. In 1965 only a select few 7-Eleven stores had the Icee Machines but by 1967, the machines were in almost every 7-Eleven store.

Giving out free Slurpee’s has helped 7-Eleven’s sales go up. During an earlier 7-Eleven’s Slurpee giveaways, the convenience store chain’s Slurpee sales soared 38 percent. That was even with giving out 4.5 million free Slurpee’s.

Today, 7-Eleven expects to give out close to 7 million Slurpee’s. “7-Eleven Day, or free Slurpee Day, gets bigger and more popular every year,” says Joe DePinto, 7-Eleven president and CEO. “This year we expect to give away 7 million.”

The promotion doesn’t stop there. Those who want to help 7-Eleven celebrate their 85th birthday at Six Flags Great Adventure, you can go for only $7.11 on July 11 after 7:11 p.m. All you need to do is show your 7-Eleven receipt from July 11 and check in after the appropriate time. Then, you can get a coupon for $7.11 admission and a wristband for an extra hour of ride time during the 7-Eleven exclusive Coasters After Dark Event.
