Nissan Canton, MS Plant is Adding 1,000 Jobs

Nissan announced that they will be adding an additional 1,000 new jobs to their plant in Canton, Mississippi. This announcement from Nissan, comes in just a few short weeks after the United Auto Workers was starting to make efforts in organizing the plant’s workers.

Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant announced Nissan’s growth plans in Canton, Mississippi with Nissan’s senior leadership, hundreds of plant employees and members of the community.

Gov. Bryant said, “Nissan has been a valued member of our state and local business communities and a leading employer in Mississippi for nearly a decade. Nissan’s trust in Mississippi’s workforce is evident, and I am proud that this company is creating 1,000 additional jobs for hard-working Mississippians. This expansion is proof that ‘Mississippi Works’ and is a superb place for business.”

Nissan’s Canton Assembly plant is a 3.5 million square foot facility that has helped attract millions of investments and job throughout the state of Mississippi since it first opened in 2003.

The new Nissan Sentra will roll out in December. The Sentra will be the seventh model produced at the plant, along with the Altima sedan, the Frontier and Titan pickups, the Xterra and Armada SUVs and the NV van.

Sentra production will also continue at the Nissan plant in Aguascalientes, Mexico. While the Altima is being produced in two locations. Production of the 2013 model started May 15 in Smyrna and Canton followed on June 6. The sedan is being shipped to dealers now and Tuesday was the official sales date.

Bill Krueger, vice chairman of Nissan Americas said, “Canton remains very important to Nissan in the Americas and Nissan globally. The addition of Sentra production is a testament to our dedicated Canton workforce and the high level of production quality that they deliver each and every day. The Canton team has proved it can compete and win on a global scale.”
