President Barack Obama made an unexpected stop at The Sink in Boulder, Colorado before he made his way to the University of Colorado on Tuesday, April 24, 2012. The restaurant owner was given 20 minutes of notice that President Obama was coming.

Floor manager Dan Williams said, “I wasn’t even working that day; I just had a manager’s meeting and I was hanging out. It was a very honoring and humbling experience.”

The Secret Service came into the restaurant, did security sweeps then strung yellow caution tape outside. Tables that were full of unsuspecting college-aged customers were allowed to stay and chow down on their burgers and fries. When President Obama’s motorcade peeled off Broadway on to 13th Street around 6:30 p.m. and pulled up in front of the bar. Obama shook hands with people that were dining on the tables outside.

Co-owner Mark Heinritz said, “Obama shook everybody’s hand and spent about 30 seconds with each person in the restaurant. He really just seemed like a nice approachable guy.”

Mark Heinritz gave Sink T-shirts to Obama to give to his family, and his staff made the Sinkza, a pepperoni, sausage, green pepper, black olives and onion pizza. The Sinkza was then renamed Wednesday morning to the POTUS.

Ricardo Ramos, general manager said, “It seemed logical. The pizza was already famous after ‘Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.’ But now people want to know what he ordered.”

The Sink was already a known spot from Guy Fieri and ‘Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives’ but now the president has left his mark on the wall of The Sink, right next to Guy Fieri’s iconic stencil.

Guy Fieri does this when he visits a restaurant for his Food Network show, Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. He paints a stencil of his be-sunglassed face that reads “GUY ATE HERE” and signs it.

While President Obama was leaving The Sink, yogurt gets spilled on his pants. The student said in an interview, “Right as I’m shaking his hand, the paparazzi kicks the bowl that I had placed on the ground onto the president.” She was surprised that this lead into a short conversation. She said, “It was pretty exciting being able to talk to him for a minute or two.”

The episode of DDD where Guy Fieri visited The Sink originally aired September 26, 2011.
