10-year old Colombian Girl from Wayuu Tribe Gives Birth to a Baby Girl

Colombian Girl Gives Birth

A 10-year old girl in Colombia gave birth to a five pound baby girl.

The girl, who’s name has not been released, arrived at the hospital 39 weeks pregnant, in tear and suffering enormous pain being caused by contractions. She delivered her daughter by cesarean section. Experts say that a C-section is normal for a very young mother because their bodies are not mature enough to give birth.

Dr. Kimberly Gecsi, an OB/GYN at UH Case Medical Center in Cleveland said, “The baby’s head needs to come through a bony outlet. But in a young girl, the pelvis may not be ready or big enough to deliver a baby.”

The 10-year old girl is part of the Wayuu people who are based in the La Guajira Peninsula in the north of the country of Colombia. The father of the new born baby is not known and the community is not giving details. It’s suspected by the local media that he may be a 15-year old boy, but other suspect he’s a 30-year old man.

With the Colombian laws, charges can not be pressed for underage sex. Their countries constitution guarantees the Wayuu freedom for the right to practice certain cultural heritages, which one is said to be the giving birth of children at an extremely young age.

Alejandro Samplayo, director of parental organisation Colombiano Bienestar Familiar, said, “Since it’s a Wayuu girl we are trying to respect all of their rights since they have autonomy and their own jurisdiction.”

Efrain Pacheco Casadiego, director at the hospital where the baby was born, said: “We’ve already seen similar cases of Wayuu girls. At a time when the girls should be playing with dolls, they go to having to take care of a baby.”

Dr. Kimberly Gecsi, an OB/GYN at UH Case Medical Center in Cleveland says, “The average age girls in the country start menstruating is about 12 and a half, but that age keeps dropping. Typically, menstruation is the last thing that happens in puberty.”

The 10-year old Colombia girl is not the youngest to give birth. The youngest mother in the world was a five-year-old girl called Lina Medina from Peru. In 1933 she gave birth to her son, Gerado, 2 weeks after her fifth birthday. Lina Medina is now 78-years old, but her son, Gerado died at the ago of 40-years old in 1979 from bone marrow disease.
