One Tree Hill two-hour series finale airs tonight, April 4, 2012 at 8p.m. on The CW after nine seasons and 187 episodes.
Premiering on September 23, 2003, “One Tree Hill” attracted 2.5 million viewers, which was a small number for a WB TV series at the time. Created by Mark Schwahn who envisioned a family series about two half-brothers attending high school in the fictional North Carolina town of Tree Hill, and who compete on and off the basketball court, known as the “River Court.”
A season finale for One Tree Hill that is real this time. Season eight finale was written as a series farewell, but in May 2011 the CW announced that “One Tree Hill” would return for 13 more episodes.
During season 5, Mark Schwahn decided to take a risk with “One Tree Hill” and instead of putting the characters in college, he decided to do a time warp and send the show to adulthood.
James Lafferty recalled, “I think everyone was really happy with that move. We had just done four years of playing high school characters, and everyone was a little older. It was kind of a relief. We would be playing closer to our ages. Also knowing that we were doing something that hadn’t been tried before was really exciting. We had a chance to make some history.” He added, “The bizarre thing is that I’ll have fans come up and tell me how they grew up with our show. They started watching when they were 12 or 13, and now they’re in college or adults out in the world. That’s a really cool payoff for us.”
James Lafferty, who plays Nathan, said at the winter television critics press tour, “I guess we were the little underdog that could. We thought we were done several times through the years. And every time we thought we were done, so did a lot of people in America. But they always found their way back to us. I think that actually provided an element of surprise and made it a bit of a roller-coaster ride for everyone.”
In the finale of OTH, the tenth anniversary of Tric brings old faces and new possibilities for the Tree Hill family. Sophia Bush, James Lafferty, Bethany Joy Galeotti, Austin Nichols, Robert Buckley, Shantel VanSanten, Jackson Brundage, Lee Norris, Lisa Goldstein, Stephen Colletti, Tyler Hilton and Paul Johansson star.
