New Superheroes Making Their Debut To The MCU

There will be four new franchises added to the MCU as it ventures to Phase 4

Published

on

Today, at the San Diego Comic-Con 2019, Marvel Studios revealed the upcoming movies in its latest lineup — including the next chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where they will be introducing new superheroes to the franchise.

In recent years, Marvel has introduced characters like the Guardians of the Galaxy, Black Panther, and Ant-Man while Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and Captain Marvel, will serve as the cornerstones of the franchise. All of these characters received praise and admiration from the MCU’s long-time fans and will undoubtedly be present in Phase 4.

The Marvel Studios president, Kevin Feige, told attendees during the SDCC that he is “not done with the current line of superheroes in the MCU and will be introducing more in the following years.”

THE ETERNALS

One of the most significant announcements was Marvel Studios’ The Eternals, but Feige did not venture into detailing the specifics of how the movie will pan out in the theater just yet. It does, however, follow the MCU’s plans on taking the entire franchise to a more “cosmic” level.

Notably, The Eternals is a creation of Jack Kirby, which is about a race of nearly immortal human beings who are continually the “Deviants.” Both are creations of “The Celestials” after biological experimentations with humans.

Where most Eternals have chosen to follow the path of peace, the Deviants are hateful and warlike. The Eternals have human-like features, unlike the spiteful Deviants. They will battle each other across the universe, usually at the expense of human life.

The Eternals will be starring Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Salma Hayek as Ajak, Lia McHugh as Sprite, and Don Lee as Gilgamesh.

Significantly, Angelina Jolie will be playing a not-so-major character called Thena. It was first reported that the oscar-winning actress was in talks about making her debut in the MCU last March.

We noted that Jolie would be opting for a lesse-demanding role due to the existing projects she has, such as directing and producing her films.

Furthermore, the movie will be directed by Chloe Zhao, the “supposed-to-be” director of the origin story of Black Widow. The projects are also said to follow the script written by Matthew and Ryan Firpo.

The Eternals will come to theaters on November 6, 2020.

SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS

Another superhero making his MCU debut is Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi that will be played by Simu Liu. Appearing alongside Liu will be Awkwafina in an undisclosed role, and Tony Leung will play the villain taking part as the (real) Mandarin.

Shang-Chi, also known as the Master of Kung Fu, will be Marvel Studio’s first lead Asian superhero.

Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who worked with Captain Marvel herself Brie Larson on The Glass Castle.

In theaters February 12, 2021.

BLADE

Feige also introduced Mahershala Ali as Blade and will also be making his debut on the big screen, but a release date has yet to be announced.

The two-time Academy Award-winning actor will be replacing Wesley Snipes who played the martial artist Daywalker three times, in 1998’s Blade (the first successful Marvel Comics film), 2002’s Blade II and 2004’s Blade Trinity. Rapper Sticky Fingaz replaced him for Spike’s Blade TV series, which only lasted one season in 2006.

The Blade Trilogy from New Line Cinema helped shepherd comic books and superheroes to the big screen. Combined, the three films brought in over $400 million at the global box office, ComingSoon reports.

Blade was created by writer Marv Wolfman and artist Gene Colan as a supporting character in the comic book “The Tomb of Dracula” #10 in July of 1973.

FANTASTIC FOUR

During the SDCC panel, Feige teased that he did not have enough time to talk about the upcoming Fantastic Four movie that is reportedly meant to merge with the storyline of the mutants.

Although they are not completely new superheroes, the news is relatively new since Disney’s successful acquisition of Fox that previously held the rights over the Fantastic Four and X-Men franchise.

“Not until we’re given the word,” Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige explained last year of plans with the Fox characters. “I have vague dreams and vague ideas. But right now, bringing to life the 10,000-plus characters that Marvel fully controls is what the gameplan is.”

In other words, we won’t be seeing any of the Marvel Studio-helmed Fantastic Four or X-Men movies for quite a while, but they should be in the near future.

10 Marvel Movies And New Series To Look Out For

There are a bunch of old superheroes from Phase 3 returning to the big screen and most of them on the small screen!

Published

Marvel concluded their panel at a full-packed Hall H during the San Diego Comic-Con, dropping all the releases Marvel fans should expect from the superhero universe as it ventures towards Phase 4.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe finally closed the book on Phase 3, which comprised of 22 films that spanned out in the past decade, with the Spider-Man: Far From Home movie released this month and its epic culminating finale for the Infinity saga, Avengers: Endgame.

Although Phase 3 bids goodbye to most of the original core superheroes such as Tony Stark’s Iron Man and Steve Roger’s Captain America, the MCU is far from stopping as it opens another chapter that they’re calling Phase 4.

Although most of the Original Six avengers won’t be seen, or won’t be complete, in the upcoming Phase 4; the MCU has been setting the tone by introducing a bunch of new superheroes to take their places such as Doctor Strange and The Guardians of the Galaxy with Spider-Man and Captain Marvel in the cornerstones.

At the SDCC, Marvel released the details about what’s there to come for fans. The production house has been holding out on information since the past few months to let Endgame shine through and waited until the latest Spider-Man installment to do so.

During the conference, Marvel announced a wallop of new movies for the next two years and more. According to the production house, there’s The Eternals, Black Widow, Shang-Chi: And the Legend of the Ten Rings, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Black Panther 2, Guardians of the Galaxy 3, Thor: Love and Thunder, Captain Marvel 2, Blade, and Fantastic Four.

So far, that’s ten movies set to start production and will be in theaters for fans to enjoy in no time. However, with Black Widow, the only film that is actually in production at the moment, we won’t be seeing any of the announced movies right away.

Marvel Studios did, however, announce some of the few movies that have initial set dates of release for next year, as seen in the list below:

  • Black Widow – May 1, 2020
  • Eternals – November 6, 2020
  • Shang-Chi and the Legend of the 10 Rings – February 21, 2021
  • Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness – May 7, 2021
  • Thor: Love and Thunder – November 5, 2021

Phase 4 won’t begin until the second quarter of next year. For the meantime, fans can enjoy Spider-Man Far From Home and find out what happened after the events following Avengers: Endgame.

Other than the list of new movies coming, Marvel Studios also talked about the TV shows that it is exclusively making for the upcoming streaming service that it is under, Disney+.

Mainly, MCU is offering new shows that will feature characters from the Phase 3 movies. One of which is the return of The Falcon (played by Anthony Mackie) and The Winter Soldier (played by Sebastian Stan) in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier where Daniel Brühl will return as the villain, Baron Zemo. Fans may also get to see how The Falcon finally uses Captain America’s shield in action! The series will be available for streaming in the fall of 2020.

WandaVision, another original series, will see the return of Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany, reprising their MCU roles as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch and Vision. Costarring with them is Teyonah Parris, whom Feige revealed would be playing the adult Monica Rambeau, who was introduced as a child in Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel.

Tom Hiddleston’s character, Loki will also be seeing a return to the MCU and cause more mischief after his imminent death in Avengers: Infinity War with his own self-titled original series: Loki.

Both WandaVision and Loki will be available on Disney+ by the Spring of 2021.

By the summer of 2021, Marvel Studios will be introducing its first animated series with the adaptation of the WHAT IF…? comics and will star Jeffrey Wright as the voice of The Watcher—many actors from across the MCU will reprise their roles as a voice talent. “What If…? will present alternate realities in the Marvel Universe that are set to warp your world,” Marvel’s website says.

Lastly, Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye is also coming to the small screen and will introduce Kate Bishop as a new character to the studio. Marvel Studios’ Hawkeye will come to Disney+ in the fall of 2021.

The Walking Dead Movie Will See An End To Rick Grimes

Published

on

Source: AMC

AMC announced during the San Diego Comic-Con Friday that Rick Grimes (played by Andrew Lincoln) will be making his return to the zombie apocalypse universe; but in a movie, instead of the network’s long-standing series.

The announcement followed a short and bleak teaser for the upcoming movie featuring a helicopter flying at the brink of looming dusk over a city skyline. The video ended with the words “The Walking Dead” and “Rick Grimes Returns: Only in Theaters.”

The films were first announced in late 2018 following Andrew Lincoln’s departure from the flagship AMC series, on which Lincoln played the role of Grimes since the pilot.

The last we’ve seen of Grimes was halfway through the most recent Season 9 when he was bleeding and heavily decapitated aboard a helicopter that was headed to an unknown location. Although it was evident throughout his last episode that he was determined to get back to his family in Alexandria, referring not just to lifelong love Michonne and last surviving child Judith, but also his friends and comrades.

The series jumped six years after Grimes’ last appearance, and it seems apparent that the zombie slayer still has not made his way back home.

With AMC’s The Walking Dead universe chief content officer Scott Gimple already announcing a trilogy of movies, and Lincoln recently signing on the first movie, fans are expecting that it will bring a more conclusive end to this sheriff’s story in the universe.

Lincoln stated in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that The Walking Dead movies would “complete” Rick Grimes’ story in the zombie apocalypse, suggesting they could mark the character’s final appearance once and for all.

Furthermore, Gimple noted that the movies would embark on the story following after The Walking Dead 9×05—Grimes’ last episode in the series—as he is also tasked of penning the storyline.

What remains unclear, however, is in what timeline does the movie coincide, especially with the 6-year leap that the series took. Some fans predict that the trilogy will tell the story of that gap, while some speculate that it will be way after the current timeline because of Grimes’ absence in the series.

“We’re going to tell the story of what happens after that helicopter flight, and these are going to be big epic entertainments,” Gimple said.

Furthermore, the question of whether the movie will take place is also heavily speculated, with some outlets saying Philadelphia because of the stark similarity of the city’s skyline with the one featured in the trailer.

“[Rick is] flying off in a helicopter, away from Virginia, and it’s going to be a new world — a very new situation with its history, and very, very different from what we’ve seen before,” was all Gimple had to say to EW regarding the topic.

What is for sure as of the moment is that AMC and Universal Pictures are developing the films but an official title for Rick’s return and an official release date has yet to be revealed.

AMC initially planned to begin production as early as 2019, but it is unclear if that is still the case. Recent comments from Lincoln from The New York Times suggest that they will be releasing the first movie as early as next year, in 2020.

Meanwhile, The Walking Dead season 10 is due to begin airing this October, and the sister series “Fear the Walking Dead,” was picked up for a sixth season on Friday.

Additionally, the comics, which the series was based and has recently concluded, shows signs that AMC is not planning on stopping. The network announced a third and untitled series that will tell the story of the first generation of kids to grow up during the zombie apocalypse.

Lincoln’s exit was a major blow for The Walking Dead, with Danai Gurira confirming her exit from the series in Season 10, as well. Currently, Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride are now the longest-serving cast members on the popular series.

Regarding the fate of the upcoming movie, there could be two scenarios: the movie will help boost back viewership for the TV series or that it will flop due to the declining number of fans of the show, which seemed evident since season 6.
