Eating Placenta New Trendy Thing For Moms Giving Birth, ask January Jones!

Eating Placenta

There are some new fads or trends that you just have to shake your head at. While you might be shaking your head, eating your placenta is supposed to be incredibly healthy for you. The topic has popped back up after People Magazine interviewed Mad Men’s January Jones and found out she touts placenta eating as a way to get healthy after giving birth.

January Jones Placenta EatingWhy did January Jones decide to eat her placenta? She tells People herself by saying, “Your placenta gets dehydrated and made into vitamins. It’s something I was very hesitant about, but we’re the only mammals who don’t ingest our own placentas. It’s not witch-crafty or anything. I suggest it to all moms.” So now that you’ve heard someone famous is doing it are you rubbing your hands together?

The trend really isn’t new and has been done for centuries in other cultures. The new health trend for pregnant mom’s has been building in the United States however and many people are looking into placenta recipes and even services that produce tinctures and capsules for use over time.

Why would someone go to all the trouble of doing something a bit on the bizarre side like eating their own placenta? The benefits are touted as hormone balancing, breast milk production inducing, uterus contraction and nutrient replacement after childbirth. It is said that the hormone balancing can prevent postpartum depression in mothers that have just given birth. We promise that eating human placenta isn’t just a Hollywood created fad!

The medical term for eating a placenta is called Placentophagy. If using homemade recipes for placenta stews, cooking or placenta smoothies really throws you for a loop there is a more acceptable way to eat your placenta from birth. It’s a method that has been used by the Chinese Culture for an extremely long time and is called Placenta Encapsulation. The placenta is made into a powder and put into pills that you can take over a period of time and get the same benefits as eating a raw placenta.

With that said, there are many people doing it the traditional way and we’re going to give you some YouTube videos below for your own placenta eating adventures.

Here’s another thought regarding animals eating their placenta: The majority of the births in the animal kingdom are not in a “protected” area. The time period surrounding birth is a dangerous one, for mother and offspring. The mother can not escape a predator during this time as easily. By ingesting the placenta, the mother is helping to ensure that she and her offspring will survive by removing a substance that gives off a distinctive scent which would attract predators. Hopefully, we humans don’t have to worry about protecting our young from predators that would eat them.

  2. I don’t think this is trendy or even normal. If I chose to eat my appendix after the surgeon removes it, I would be committed to the loonie bin. The argument that “it is her RIGHT, it is her BODY” is utterly ridiculous”.
