Micro Arc Oxidation technology revealed for the HTC One S [video]

Micro Arc Oxidation HTC One S

HTC One S Micro Arc OxidationIf you’ve been thinking about getting a new smartphone from HTC you might want to take a really close look at the HTC One S. HTC released a video today revealing a technology used on the chassis of the HTC cellphone in manufacturing. The process is called micro arc oxidation and makes the cellphone’s case almost invincible.

The process is described by HTC on their video as this, “To create the extremely durable, premium finish for HTC One S we use a process called micro-arc oxidation. Originally designed for use on satellites and race cars, the process starts with aircraft aluminum. Ten thousand volts of electricity hit the metal, almost like lighting strikes, causing a microscopic transformation which creates a super-strong ceramic case that is five times stronger than aerospace aluminum.”

What really is this process? It’s a unique process that starts with aircraft 6000 series aluminum with 10,000 volts of energy directly onto the piece of metal. It’s like lightning striking the phone. It’s a very microscopic chemical reaction that attacks the aluminum surface and creates a ceramic surface on the phone. It’s a treatment to the metal instead of an actual coating.

Micro Arc Oxidation SmartphoneWikipedia goes a little bit more scientific and in depth by describing this process the HTC One S smartphone is using as, “Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO), also known as microarc oxidation (MAO), is an electrochemical surface treatment process for generating oxide coatings on metals. It is similar to anodizing, but it employs higher potentials, so that discharges[1] occur and the resulting plasma modifies the structure of the oxide layer. This process can be used to grow thick (tens or hundreds of micrometers), largely crystalline, oxide coatings on metals such as aluminium, magnesium and titanium. Because they can present high hardness[2] and a continuous barrier, these coatings can offer protection against wear, corrosion or heat as well as electrical insulation.”

So it sounds great and you’re really impressed, right? Well, maybe you’re not impressed but here is why you should be impressed.

Reasons why you want Micro Arc Oxidation:

  • Makes the phone thinner & stronger
  • You don’t need a case
  • More durable
  • Almost 5 times stronger than aerospace aluminum
  • It’s 3 times stronger than stainless steel

This is the same technology used by NASA to make satellites. HTC poses the question, “Does your phone really need this technology?” Maybe not, but you will certainly have an amazing phone on the market that is strong, durable, doesn’t need a case and isn’t going to get damaged from normal use. The HTC One S is certainly making headway as one the most impressive designed phones by the case.

Phone specs are great too! 1.5Ghz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, AMOLED qHD display, 1GB of RAM, 8 megapixel camera with a f/20 lens, 16GB hard drive, Ice Cream Sandwich Android OS and it’s ready to be in your pocket by April 2012.
