Aretha Franklin Not At Whitney Houston's Funeral

Whitney Houston’s godmother was Aretha Franklin and she was expected to perform at Ms. Houston’s funeral. Aretha was scheduled to perform, “The Greatest Love of All” at 69 years old. Aretha Franklin is certainly a musical icon herself and worked closely with Whitney Houston all her life.

A statement released by Aretha Franklin discussed leg problems she had been having after performing a Friday night concert. Aretha’s statement about not attending Whitney’s funeral on Saturday was as follows:

“Regretfully, I am so sorry that I was unable to be with you at Whitney’s service today.”

“I had every intention of being there. But unfortunately I had terrible leg spasms and locked leg muscles until 4:00 a.m. this morning following my concert last night, which I’ve been having for the last few days.”

“I feel it necessary and very important to stay off my leg today as much as possible until concert time this evening. My heart goes out to my dear friend Cissy, Dionne, Bobbi Kristina and the rest of the family. May God keep them all. – Aretha & the Franklin Family.”

The concert where Aretha started having major problems with her leg was at Radio City Music Hall. Aretha acknowledged her goddaughter in the concert as people that are at the funeral today were in attendance. Famous icons and people close to Whitney that were at the concert were people like Jesse Jackson, L.A. Reid and Clive Davis.

Aretha Frankin said at the concert to everyone in attendance, “I would like to acknowledge the passing of one of the greatest singers that ever stood behind a microphone. She’s moved on up just a little bit higher now. And we don’t wonder where she is. One of the last songs she sung is ‘Jesus Loves Me.’ When God is for you, who can be against you? That’s all that matters.”

There was also an exclusive piece done by People magazine by Rennie Dyball that is from Aretha Franklin. The piece is titled, “The Whitney I Knew.” You can read the exclusive piece featured by People magazine over here.

A very recent concert of Aretha Franklin’s was released on YouTube in a 7 minute version. The description is: Aretha Franklin singing at a private concert at the McGlohon Theatre, Charlotte, NC, 2/13/12. One of the top comments on the video from someone who attended said, “I was at this concert. I am usually not an emotional person but the moment captured by this video tore at my heart strings and caused me to reflect on Whitney’s death and what her loss meant to those who loved her dearly and not to focus on the tawdry scenearios surrounding her life and death. We ALL have our foibles…things we can be criticized and even hated or despised for. Aretha teaches us to focus on the good and grieve it loss.”

The concert of Aretha’s is below.

In this next video Aretha calls Whitney Houston one of the greatest singers of all time.

  1. I don’t give a damn what aretha says… she should have been there… even if she went in a wheelchair… come on… that was ur god daughter… nothin should have kept u away… that is a disgrace… where is her respect….if she so called had leg problems then she should’ve cancelled her appearance 4 the event and made the funeral a priority… smdh… that don’t make no damn sense

    • I do agree with Candy, although I am a long time Aretha fan, will follow Aretha all over, lost count on how many concets I’ve attended in the tri-state area. She did not have to perform, but she should have rented a limo and rested (Laid back) for the hour ride to Newark, then came back for her concert, I was trully disappointed for Whitney’s family. Some people just don’t put themselves out for the others. I could see if she was 80 and senille, or gravely ill… but…

    • I honestly think Aretha decided against going to the funeral because she felt it was a senseless death. If you remember, Aretha patted Wendy Williams on the back for calling Whitney out about not being sincere in her Oprah interview… Something everyone else got upset at Wendy about
