OK Go – Needing / Getting stars in Chevy Sonic Super Bowl 46 Ad

OK Go Needing Getting Superbowl CommercialChevy’s Sonic was the focus around their “Let’s Do This” Super Bowl campaign that was shown to over 110 million NFL football fans. Some people were most likely watching the Super Bowl for just the commercials and they got what they wanted, prime time SuperBowl ads that went above and beyond.

A lot of work went into the OK Go Needing / Getting Super Bowl Commercial starring the Chevy Volt. The commercial took four months of prepping for the actual taping of the OK Go ad for Chevy and then four days for taping the actual commercial. The location of the shoot was in the desert outside of Los Angeles, California.

Over 1,000 instruments were used in the making of the Chevy Sonic Super Bowl XLVI commercial. There were 1,157 homemade instruments, 55 pianos all tuned to the same octave and 288 guitars. The Chevy Sonic was retrofitted with pneumatic arms and tools to play the instruments as they made it through the desert obstacle course. The speed of the car made the music as it activated different instruments and played different notes.

Chevrolet is seeing a lot of social media buzz on Twitter and Facebook from their hip commercial that combines music and coolness with a new type of eco-friendly gas mileage conscious car. The Chevy Sonic is Chevrolet’s new weapon against other car makers fuel efficient and compact offerings. You can watch the Chevy Official Video of OK Go – Needing/Getting below.

Listed in the description on the release of the video they say:

The new music video from OK Go, made in partnership with Chevrolet. OK Go set up over 1000 instruments over two miles of desert outside Los Angeles. A Chevy Sonic was outfitted with retractable pneumatic arms designed to play the instruments, and the band recorded this version of Needing/Getting, singing as they played the instrument array with the car. The video took 4 months of preparation and 4 days of shooting and recording. There are no ringers or stand-ins; Damian took stunt driving lessons. Each piano had the lowest octaves tuned to the same note so that they’d play the right note no matter where they were struck. Many thanks to Chevy for believing in and supporting such an insane and ambitious project, and to Gretsch for providing the guitars and amps.
