Dubrovnik TourismA Croatian Tourism Minister and destination manager for the city of Dubrovnik, Pave Zupan Ruskovic was fired after a comment she made to a local newspaper. She told the local newspaper the she would prefer if Australasian tourists stayed away from the historic town because when they enter the town they are crazy and drunk and it’s not appropriate.

“This summer season we’ve had an increased number of visits from young people from Australia and New Zealand and we were not delighted. It would be better if they did not come.” She continued to say, “Already when entering the city they are drunk and crazy. And that’s absolutely not appropriate for any city and in particular for Dubrovnik. Dubrovnik does not need drunken Kiwi and Aussie tourists walking naked down the central street,” she told the Dubrovacki List.

After the comment Pave Zupan Ruskovic was fired and relieved from all her duties as the tourism minister for Dubrovnik. The city mayor says he will not be renewing her contract because of the lack or her “tourism diplomacy.”

“The personal attitudes of Pave Zupan Ruskovic were not appropriate,” Dubrovnik Mayor Andro Vlahusic said.

“Dubrovnik is an open and free city where all the guests are welcome. The private opinions of Pave Zupan Ruskovic have made it seem as if some tourists are not welcome in Dubrovnik, and we have found such quotes unacceptable.”

Dubrovnik Mayor Andro Vlahusic stated, “The common aim of all of us who work for the city tourism is to gain as the best quality as we can. It can be a guarantee of security and a pleasant stay of visitors no matter of their origin or age.”

There have been numerous accidents in Australia. In August 2011, a 20-year old female was seriously injured when she fell off the cliff in Dubrovnik. That marked the fifth serious fall in southern Croatia in 2011.

Another young 24-year female, Tanya Hearnden slipped off the ocean wall and hit the rocks and fought for her life. Less than 24 hours later a backpacker fell down a ravine and landed on a concrete roof and was left in serious condition.

A 24-year old male broke his spine after he dove from a cliff in the Bay of Stiniva. Another one died after he slipped and fell into an abyss on the island of Brac.

The walled city of Dubrovnik, on the Adriatic Sea coast, is one of the most prominent tourist destinations on the Adriatic, reported from TVNZ.
