Kim Jong-il Confirmed Dead at 69, North Korea Awaits Future

Kim Jong-il DeadThe leader of North Korea since July 8th, 1994, Kim Jong II has been confirmed dead by multiple sources. The White House & associated departments have confirmed Kim Jong-il’s death on Twitter and press release statements. CNN was one of the first to release the information from South Korea’s Yonhap news agency in a chronilogical format that breaks the developing story down.

The State Department said on Twitter:

Statement by the Press Secretary on reports of the death of Kim Jong Il

We are closely monitoring reports that Kim Jong Il is dead. The President has been notified, and we are in close touch with our allies in South Korea and Japan. We remain committed to stability on the Korean peninsula, and to the freedom and security of our allies.

It was North Korean state television that announced the death of Kim Jong II to the entire population of North Korea. After Kim Jong suffered a stroke in 2008 his health had been deteriorating. While Mr. Kim had a love for cigars, cognac, gourmet food and the finer things in life he was never thought to be very healthy and suspected of having diabtes and & heart disease.

The time of death of Kim Jong-il was announced as 8:30am on Saturday by North Korean State TV. The funeral will be on December 28th, 2011 and the countries mourning period will be until December, 29th, 2011.
