Don’t you go thinking that Santa doesn’t exist because he’s alive and well in America. After an anonymous Secret Santa in Michigan dropped into their local Kmart (NASDAQ:SHLD) and paid off three large layaway bills the entire US is seeing random anonymous layaway payoffs. A Merry Christmas seems to be in the future for many layaway holders and the list is growing.
The Kmart store was located in Grand Rapids, Michigan that started the Kmart Santa flurry of kindness. A woman in her 30’s walked up to the layaway clerk in the Kmart and asked to pay on layaway accounts. At first the clerk was confused and didn’t realize this was an act of kindness and just thought the lady was picking up layaway items while Christmas shopping. The random payments were on three accounts with one condition, that toys were on the list. The accounts were paid off with just $10 left to pay for a total of about $500 in anonymous donations.
After this Christmas story broke loose and spread on radio waves and tv stations the layaway donation fever has picked up across the country. One story was shared by the Associated Press about a lay away donator that paid off as much as 50 layaway accounts. The story starts with a man walking up to pay a little on his layaway bill that would most likely not be paid before Christmas when a woman walked up from behind and said, “No, I’m paying for it.” The man stood there in his worn out boots and dirty clothes with his three kids as started crying after he learned it wasn’t a joke.
The woman in Indianapolis wasn’t done with that layaway account. During a Tuesday night at the store the woman paid off 50 accounts and proceeded to hand out $50 bills before she left and paid for cart fulls of toys. The Associated Press interview revealed, “She was doing it in the memory of her husband who had just died, and she said she wasn’t going to be able to spend it and wanted to make people happy with it,” Deppe said. The woman did not identify herself and only asked people to “remember Ben,” an apparent reference to her husband.
The Christmas Spirit is alive and well in America as Kmart Santa’s are paying off layaway bills in states like Montana, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska and Chicago. Most of the donations are anonymous and include layaway accounts that have toys in them. Santa Claus or Saint Nick would certainly be proud of these Christmas Angels spreading good cheer!
