In what was supposed to be a routine OB GYN appointment to find out the sex of their newest addition, Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar, the parents of the popular TLC reality TV show, 19 kids and counting, received the news that they had miscarried what was going to be baby number 20, when the doctor was unable to locate a heartbeat. She was just into her second trimester.
In a statement to People earlier Michelle says “We had just been talking about baby names last night, and they were getting excited about naming a boy or a girl. It has been a real sad disappointment…I feel like my heart broke telling my children. They have all been so excited about this baby and looking forward to April coming around and having a new little one in our arms. That was the most difficult. The Lord is the giver of life and he can choose when that life is ready to go on and be with Him.”
They have plans to name the child when the sex is determined and hold a funeral service for their 20th child.
Jim Bob told E! News that Michelle was at home, surrounded by family and friends and asked for privacy for his family during what is a very difficult and sad time. This was Michelle’s second miscarriage, the first being after the birth of their first child Josh. It was at this time, that the Duggars felt moved to let God decide the size of their family, since Michelle had conceived and miscarried while on birth control pills.
This controversial decision has led to all kinds of opinions to be heard, from the supportive to the downright rude and accusatory. But anyone who has followed the Duggars at all, since the show 17 kids and counting was aired on TLC in 2008, knows that they are self sufficient, do not rely on things like food stamps and other forms of aid to raise their children. They are debt free and even built their 7,000 square foot home themselves.
But a lot of people don’t understand their choices, and when people don’t understand something, it often comes out in hostility and judgments. Michelle and Jim Bob have never let the critics affect their choices, and have often answered the difficult questions asked of them with dignity and patience. Whether anyone understands or not, they are clearly following their own beliefs, they are not hurting anyone, and they obviously provide thousands with much viewing pleasure, as their fan base grows.
The news of this miscarriage has many questioning whether, at Michelle’s age of 45, and due to the very dangerous pregnancy and birth of their youngest child, Josie, born 3 and a half months premature in December of 2009, if enough is enough. While many believe she should stop, and think that Josie’s premature birth and the pregnancy complications, and now this miscarriage are signs that it is time to stop; only Michelle and Jim Bob have the right to make that decision.
Whether people agree or not, they are clearly following their own beliefs, they are not hurting anyone, they are certainly not living off of tax payers’ dollars, and they obviously provide thousands with much viewing pleasure, as their fan base for 19 kids and counting continues to grow.
