At 4:30pm EST on Thursday December 1st, 2011 Google released the new YouTube redesign to the everyone that accesses YouTube. For over a week insiders and high level YouTube users have been acessing Google’s new YouTube design and showing pictures and videos of what they found. Today however, anyone can access the new design at YouTube.com
One new big focus of the new YouTube that you will notice will definitely be the channels. The New YouTube is all about channels, how you’ll use them, make them, curate them and more. Google states on the Get more into YouTube page, “We’ve given YouTube a refresh. When you login, you’ll be greeted with recent activity from your subscriptions. You can also browse and add new Channels to your homepage. Connect with Google+ and Facebook to share your favorites with friends. There’s plenty to discover, so login and give it a spin.”
The channels section from Google states, “Channels on YouTube were redesigned with you in mind, whether you watch videos, make them, or both. Everyone with a YouTube account has their very own Channel — sign in now to start personalizing your presence on YouTube.” The new YouTube video that is promoting the redesigned YouTube is getting some harsh comments and larger amount of dislikes than likes.
The relaunched YouTube design video which will walk you through the new setup currently has 1,120 likes and 3,609 dislikes. It’s no news that users don’t like redesigns of major sites, especially in social media. The two top comments on the video made by Google’s YouTube division say the following:
“THIS IS YOUTUBE’S WAY OF MAKING SMALLER YOUTUBER’S HAVE TO WORK HARDER TO GET RECOGNIZED. IF YOU CAN’T SEE PEOPLE ON THEIR CHANNELS, YOU WONT KNOW THEY EXIST.
@*@* YOUTUBE FOR THIS SNEAKY BS.”
“I LOVE all of these social web buttons I’ll never use! And thank you so much for recommending me great channels like collegehumor!! I love beer, @*@* and fart jokes spamming up my screen!!! xDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
What kind of @*@*head deviantartist came up with this garbage?”
While users may be upset with the new features of YouTube they can rest assured that things won’t stay the same. According to Mashable there are company insiders that state many more redesign changes are coming like more channel focused content and templates. It will take everyone awhile to get used to the new changes but just like Facebook it’s expected that people will learn to use the new YouTube and embrace the new channel focus.
Google’s Youtube wants to replace the channels on your TV into channels for the Internet. The new YouTube will be more socially focused making it easier for users to use Google+, Facebook and Twitter. With YouTube seeing massive growth numbers over the last year they want to grow their influence into the social media space as much as possible and allow you to share your favorite videos on your favorite social network. Do you think you’ll find yourself using YouTube channels in replacement of TV channels?
