Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez Arrested in Suspicion of White House Shooting

White House ShootingOscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez was arrested today, November 16, 2011 for possible connection with the White House Shooting. On Tuesday, the Secret Service found two bullets at the White House. One hit a bulletproof window and the other was found on the exterior of the White House.

In a statement, the Secret Service said, “A round was stopped by ballistic glass behind the historic exterior glass. One additional round has been found on the exterior of the White House. This damage has not been conclusively connected to Friday’s incident, and an assessment of the exterior of the White House is ongoing.”

Last Friday, U.S. Park Police heard shots fired just yards from the White House and about five minutes later, officers found a vehicle several blocks away. The Secret Service said, “Evidence in the vehicle led to U.S. Park Police obtaining an arrest warrant for Oscar Ortega-Hernandez,” who is described as a 21-year-old Hispanic male, 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighing 160 pounds. There was a knockoff AK-47 weapon that was registered to Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez in the car.

A tip from someone who saw Ortega-Hernandez and could identify him, led to his arrest this afternoon. The Secret Service would not tell the exact location where the suspect was arrested.

Ortega-Hernandez is from Idaho Falls, Idaho. He was reported missing on October 31, 2011 by his family and on Friday morning was stopped by police in Arlington, Virgina for a report of a suspicious person. Ortega-Hernandez has been arrested in three states for some of the following; arrests for domestic violence, burglary and alcohol possession violation.

Authorities believe that Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez may have been spending some time with the Occupy DC protest group. The Occupy DC protest camp is only blocks away from the White House, but it’s still unclear whether he was part of that movement. Police also say that Ortega-Hernandez suffers from mental issues.

The bullet that hit the glass bulletproof window, cracked it and it was on the residential living level of President Barack Obama and his family. None of them were home at the time. Obama and the first lady were traveling, without their daughters for a nine day trip to San Diego and then to Hawaii for a summit.
