PlayStation 4 Release Date? Sony is Set to Announce Details on February 20

PlayStation 4

Sony released the first PlayStation in 1994. It has been a staple in the gaming industry since day one and the game console could be set for its next version.

The Japanese company released a video on their blog that has a tagline of “see the future”.  A date of February 20th has been set for a big announcement, but exact details were not revealed. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the company will indeed announce the updated model and they are expected to go on sale in 2013.

Earlier this month Sony’s CEO Kaz Hirai was quoted saying, “Why go first when your competitors can look at your specifications and come up with something better”. This single quote convinced many that Sony would delay any news or a release until after Microsoft announced their followup to the Xbox 360.

The PlayStation 3 was released an entire year after the Xbox 360 was on the market.  Both companies have had their current generation consoles out since late 2005 and early 2006. In technology terms that is an extremely long time, but the devices were extremely powerful and some think they are still not fully utilized. Sales of the PS3 are estimated at over 70 million which is a small number compared to the older PS2 that sold over 160 million units. Microsoft has seen similar sales numbers at 70 million for the Xbox 360’s.

Nintendo is a distant 3rd place manufacturer that has recently released their updated Wii U console. Sales numbers have been off to a sluggish beginning at 890,000 devices sold in the US to date. The Wii U is though off to a faster sales start compared to the previous system in the Wii, which was not a hardcore gaming console.

While details for the new PlayStation are scarce, there have been reports that the company will still utilize a DVD loading system. Rumors of a download and only stream option were recently outed, but new reports confirmed Sony decided against the new model. Other rumors and supposed leaks say Sony will drop the longtime dual shock controller setup in favor of some sort of touchscreen that will feature bio-metric sensors.

Many current PS3 owners are anxious to get more details like if the new model will still support PS3 games and what the new interface will be capable of. Social interaction should be an area that sees a huge improvement over the PS3 environment.

For now we will have to be left with speculation, but later this month it looks like we will have all the details including the name. Do you think it will keep the naming scheme with PlayStation 4 being next in line?
