Microsoft may be known for their popular gaming system and top notch software programs, but now they’re getting into the tablet world. No one is coming close to the monster that is the Apple iPad, but Microsoft is looking to add to the competition and put some heat on Apple. However this comes with a little resentment as Microsoft was said to release four major products last year that would make their debut in 2012. They came through on two of their products so far; a new Microsoft office phone, and the brand new tablet, but haven’t yet reviled their new Xbox 720, and Microsoft 8 is supposed to come out the same time its tablet is. That will be a story all in itself, but for now will focus on their newest release which they are calling it the Microsoft Surface Tablet.
Microsoft announced their product Monday, June 18 at the Milk Studios in Hollywood, CA. The tablet is a light and sleek looking gadget as it only weighs 1.5 pounds with a cool looking magnesium case and a built-in stand. A cool feature to the tablet is that it comes with a removable keyboard cover and a Netflix application. To go along with this it has a durable Gorilla Glass scene with a resolution of 1080 pixels and also a pen interface in which you can write on the screen.
“We believe that any intersection between human and machine can be made better when all aspects of the experience [hardware and software] working together,” Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said.
The device is a little over 10 inches with a HD widescreen and will be configured with an option of having the two different programing systems. The first system which will be configured when the tablet comes out will feature 32 or 64 GB storage room and a full-size USB port. The other system which will have the full version of Windows 8 is set to release about 3 months after the first version and will be configured with 64 and 128 GB storage room.
The company has not set a price for the tablet yet but has said they want to price them to rival the Ipad, which the most basic Ipad is $499. For the bigger data size surface tablet the company figures to price it around the same price of an ultrabook which cost $1,000.
The later part of 2012 is sure to be an interesting time in the world of technology; I know I will be eager to at least play around with the Windows tablet just to see how it will hold up against the Ipad.
