The discount applies to the Wi-Fi and 4G LTE versions of the Kindle Fire. With the discount, the large-screen tablet will cost you $249 for the 16GB Wi-Fi-only version. For comparison, PCMag states that’s the same price as the 7-inch 32GB model Kindle Fire HD.

The Kindle Fire HD 8.9 comes in four different sizes. The WiFi-only model comes in 16GB and 32GB sizes, while the 4G LTE version comes in either 32GB or 64GB, all priced at $249, $319, $449, and $549 after applying the $50 student discount.

The 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD features a 1,920-by-1,200-pixel resolution HD screen with polarizing filter and anti-glare technology for rich color and deep contrast from any viewing angle, as well as dual speakers. It also features a front-facing HD camera and a Micro-HDMI port.

The Kindle Fire HD also features Dual-band, dual-antenna Wi-Fi for 40% faster downloads and streaming.

GfK, a research firm recently polled 3000 people on their most preferred purchases over the holiday season. Around 24 percent of them said their perfect device would be a Kindle Fire. The iPad 3 came in at number two, whereas the Samsung Galaxy Note came in with a popularity of 11 percent.

Media research and insight director at GfK Julia Lamaison said: “With the launch of the iPad 3 in March and the buzz which followed, it is really interesting to learn that the Kindle Fire is the leading tablet this festive season. Tablets are becoming an intrinsic part of the household but price is a key factor as people look to buy cheaper models to save money.”
