Friday July, 27, 2012 will kick off the much anticipated Olympic ceremony in London, there will be thousands of athletes to watch and cheer on. There are a handful of American athletes that you should try and keep an eye out for, because they might put on a show and capture some elusive gold medals.
There is a great dynamic duo for USA in women’s volleyball as Misty May-Treanor and Kerri walsh Jennings team up once again to try and continue their dominance in the sand. The combination has been the best team in women’s sand volleyball for a long time now, they are actually seeking a three-peat in London, as they have won the last two Olympic gold medal matches. They are still listed as the favorites to bring home the gold yet again.
On the track side of the Olympics, the USA has an outstanding team that is loaded with tremendous talent and youth, besides Jamaica, USA may have the best sprint team entering the Olympics. Three athletes to keep an eye on may be 100, 200 meter dash, and 4×400 relay standout Allyson Felix, sprint superstar Tyson Gay, and world champion hurdler Lolo Jones. These are just a few track athletes to look out for, there will be a lot more than just these three athletes that will make headlines.
When we take a look at the swimming part of the Olympics, the USA will have an arsenal of swimmers that will be hard to beat when competition time rolls around. USA has arguable the two best swimmers in the world with Micheal Phelps who is set to become the best Olympian ever if he captures a few more gold medals in London. His teammate and stiff competitor Ryan Lochte will also be a threat in the pool as some people believe he is one the same level as Phelps. USA also has a young high school phenom Missy Franklin who has taken the world by storm, turning heads with every win and record she breaks, make she to certainly keep an eye out for her on the medal stand.
When gymnastics gets under way USA may not be the favorites to take home the overall team gold medal, but they will have a few athletes male, and female that may make their way onto the medal stand. Youthful and goal driven female gymnast Jordyn Wieber who will be in her first ever Olympics, and teammate Gasbby Douglas look like that have what it takes to be an Olympic gold medalist, or at least an Olympic medalist. On the men’s side, hardworking and determination has Danell Leyva and John Orozco on the path of Olympic glory, if they performed like they did at the USA Olympic trials you may see them singing the National anthem with a gold medal around their neck.
More than 600 athletes will be representing the United States in London, and the United States are once again the favorites to take home the most medals as a country. The United States were on top of the medal stand in Beijing collecting 110 total medals 36 were Gold, 38 Silver, and 36 Bronze. The 110 total medals were the third most in US history. Make sure you tune in for the 17 day spectacle of the Olympics and root on your fellow Americans.
