Earthquake in California at Magnitude 3.8 in San Bernardino County

Earthquake California 3.8 Magnitude

The Earthquake in California that registered at a magnitude 3.8 on April 28th, 2012 was felt at 8:07am. The original report on the CA Earthquake from the USGS read at a 4.1 magnitude which was later downgraded to the 3.8 magnitude official record.

The San Andreas Fault was where the earthquake was centered at with it’s direct epicenter being very near Devore, CA. Other Nearby cities listed by the USGS are:

  • 12km (7mi) W from Crestline, California
  • 12km (7mi) NW from Muscoy, California
  • 15km (9mi) NNW from Rialto, California
  • 16km (9mi) N from Fontana, California
  • 503km (312mi) WNW from Phoenix, Arizona

Aftershocks continued after the 3.8 magnitude earthquake hit the Los Angeles area. The first aftershock was a 2.0 magnitude which was about a half mile away from the original epicenter and hit around 2 minutes directly after the bigger one. The next aftershock with with a 1.8 magnitude at 8:14am.

While the earthquake was felt in most cities in the Los Angeles area most reported areas were places like West Hollywood, Marina del Ray, Northridge and downtown LA. Damages to some homes in Rancho Cucamonga, California were reported and are being investigated.

Many people reported the earthquake as not a lot of shaking back and forth but a very strong jolt in one direction. One person told KCAL-TV in LA that they were jolted so hard that they flew out of bed. Twitter lit up directly after the earthquake with many people asking if there was an earthquake and telling people that an earthquake had just woke them up.
