Just because it’s summer and it’s generally nice outside doesn’t mean that cold symptoms aren’t running rampant throughtout the US. It’s being reported by the U.S. Center for Disease Control & Prevention that whooping cough outbreaks are approaching numbers that could make this the most severe time period in half a decade.
The amount of cases of whooping cough or the medical name, Pertussis, have now reach over 18,000 across the United States. The worst hit states are Washington and Wisconsin. However notifications of the outbreak spreading to places like South Florida are also becoming an issue. Miami-Dade County has seen 26 confirmed cases and Broward County at 26 confirmed cases.
The disease is a respitory disease that spreads easily from when others infected cough or sneeze around friends and family. The cough can go on for weeks and up to 3 months if not treated. It’s important to make sure you understand the whooping cough symptoms.
The Mayo Clinic lists the following symptoms as signs that you have whooping cough (Pertussis):
Mild Symptoms Like A Cold:
- Runny nose
- Nasal congestion
- Sneezing
- Red, watery eyes
- A mild fever
- Dry cough
After 1 or 2 Weeks Severe and Prolonged Attacks:
- Provoke vomiting
- Result in a red or blue face
- Cause extreme fatigue
- End with a high-pitched “whoop” sound during the next breath of air
You should not hesitate to take any family member to the doctor immediately as soon as you notice any symptoms like vomiting, turning red or blue in the face or inhaling with a whooping sound.
