Virginia has the Fastest Internet Speed within the US, Report Shows

Internet Speed by State

In a new report from Broadview Networks it shows if you want fast internet, head to Virginia. Virginia gets an average of 13.7 megabits per second and tops the country for the fastest Internet speed.

Broadview Networks created a map that shows which states have the fastest Internet service and which have the slowest. The cloud services provider got the data from Akamai’s “State of the Internet” report released in June.

Broadview Networks explained their map, “Using Akamai’s “State of the Internet” Report, we were able to find the average internet speed in each state. The speeds are measured in megabits per second (mbps) which is simply a measurement of data transfer speed within a network. In our map, darker greens represent faster speeds and lighter greens represent slower speeds.”

Akamai’s report also looks at Internet speeds around the world. Even the fastest speed in the nation, Virginia’s 13.7 average megabits per second, is just more than half of South Korea’s average 23.6 mbps. In second place, and far behind South Korea, is Japan with an average of 14.6 Mbps. The US ranks No. 10 with an average of 10.5 Mbps.

According to Akamai, if a state has an average speed higher than 10 Mbps it counts as having “high broadband.” All 26 states achieved this status and, no state fell into the “low broadband” category, which is an average lower than 4 Mbps.

Within the US, Alaska had the slowest Internet speed at 7.0 mbps. Along with Alaska, rounding out the bottom five are West Virginia, Montana, Kentucky and Arkansas.

The most-improved state, year over year, was Kansas, which saw a 91 percent increase in its average speed. Arkansas and Idaho posted percent growth in the 60s, while Maryland and Georgia saw speeds increase by more than 50 percent.
