Verruckt, Schlitterbahn Water Slide Opening Date Scheduled for July 10, 2014

Verruckt Opening Date

After months of delays, the world’s tallest water slide in Kansas City, Kansas at Schlitterbahn water park is scheduled to open on Thursday, July 10, 2014.

In April, Verruckt ride’s design had to be changed after some test rafts went flying through the air and crashed to the ground.

The ride was originally scheduled to open on May 23 when the Schlitterbahn water park season began, but a mechanical issue delayed it from opening. The next scheduled opening on June 5 was postponed, and a June 29 date also was delayed due to the conveyor system for the rafts having a glitch. Park officials have said the delays were needed to allow for more testing.

Those issues has been addressed, spokeswoman Winter Prosapio said Tuesday morning.

There are “very few, if any, rules in the state of Kansas” governing rider safety at theme parks, Edwin Birch, spokesman for the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas, told KMBC.

Prosapio said the park and Verruckt were required to meet all local codes and building requirements but that Schlitterbahn abided by national guidelines related to waterpark rides.

“This ride is almost a hybrid between a waterpark ride and a roller coaster, so we are going with the more conservative waterpark guidelines,” she said.

Guinness World Records representatives visited the Verruckt slide in April to certify it as the tallest water slide on the globe at 17 stories at 168 feet and 7 inches tall.

Riders on the Verrückt, which means “insane” in German, plummet at 60 miles per hour to 70 miles per hour on four-person rafts.

The park’s designer and the slide’s engineer tried it out last week.
