On August 18th of this year, the 62nd edition of Miss World was held in Dongsheng Fitness Center Stadium, Ordos, Inner Mongolia, China. The winner…drum roll please…is Miss China’s Yu Wenxia! This happens to be the second time in the history of the Miss World pageant that Miss China has won the title of Miss World, the first being in 2007 when Zhang Zilin won the honor. Miss China overcame more than 100 contestants at a glittering ceremony on the edge of the Gobi desert in a Chinese mining city.
This pageant stands out from others as it made a couple of firsts in its’ 62-year existence. For one thing, this was the first time that the Inner Mongolian city of Ordos has ever hosted the international beauty pageant. Though it is too early to be definitive, most likely this will not be the last time the pageant takes place here. Another first was the actual total of participants in the contest which was 116. These contestants came from all over the world to compete and made this year the biggest turnout in the pageants history.
The new Miss World is a 23-year-old music student who aspires to one day become a music teacher. Last year’s Miss World, Ivian Sarcos from Venezuela, crowned her successor at the conclusion of the contest. The 1st runner up was Sophie Moulds from Wales and the 2nd runner up was Jessica Kahawaty from Australia. When he judges asked the question of who should win the title of Miss World, Yu replied in simple words saying, “She should be a woman with kind heart and humility, who has simple values in complex world.”
The show began with all 116 participants being shown to everyone through the use of video presentations. The contestants each gave compliments about the fascinating cultures and cities of Changsu and Shanghai. The fascinating post card video showed examples of the glorious time the participants had in China as they had the opportunity to witness the greatest performing acts that China had to offer.
The Miss World Flag was passed on to the City of Bali, Indonesia being it is tradition for the flag to be passed on to the next host country. Everyone did not go away empty handed in that other contestants were fortunate to win different honors. For example, India, for her work with underprivileged children that was widely appreciated, became winner of Miss World Beauty with Purpose 2012. China won the round for Miss World Talent. Winning the honor of Miss World Sports Woman 2012 was Miss Sweden. Miss India was successful in winning the Multimedia Award 2012. The two other winners were Miss Wales for the Beach Fashion round 2012 and Miss South Sudan was the winner of top Model round 2012.
