Patraeus Affair Leads To Resignation as CIA Director: Paula Broadwell Photo Released

CIA Director Resigns

CIA director, David Petraeus resigns after admitting to having an extramarital affair with Paula Broadwell.

An investigation began on David Petraeus after the FBI was alerted that Paula Broadwell may have accessed his personal email account.  Petraeus wasn’t being investigated for doing anything wrong in his personal life, it was just a security measure that he could have been blackmailed or “put in a vulnerable spot,” The Congressional official added that “it was portrayed to us that the F.B.I. was investigating something else and came upon him. My impression is that the F.B.I. stumbled across this.”

David Petraeus met with President Obama on Thursday afternoon to offer his resignation.  President Obama didn’t accept his resignation right at that moment.  He told him, ‘I’ll think about it overnight,’ the administration official said. The president finally accepted Petraeus’ resignation during a phone call on Friday.

In a statement distributed to the CIA workforce (see below), David Petraeus, who just turned 60-years old said, “After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair. Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours.”

In a statement, Obama said Petraeus has “provided extraordinary service to the United States for decades. By any measure, he was one of the outstanding general officers of his generation, helping our military adapt to new challenges and leading our men and women in uniform through a remarkable period of service in Iraq and Afghanistan, where he helped our nation put those wars on a path to a responsible end. Through his lifetime of service, David Petraeus has made our country safer and stronger.”

The statement by President Obama did not exactly address why Petraeus’ resigned, but the president said that his “thoughts and prayers are with Dave and Holly Petraeus, who has done so much to help military families through her own work. I wish them the very best at this difficult time.”

David Petraeus’ wife, Holly Petraeus is an assistant director of the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. She and Petraeus met in 1973 at the U.S. Military Academy, where her father was the superintendent.

The woman David Petraeus had an extramarital affair with, Paula Broadwell, is also married. She is a West Point graduate and a research associate at Harvard University. Paula Broadwell co-authored the biography book of David Petraeus, “All In: The Education of General David Petraeus” that was published this year. They spent a year together in Afghanistan when she was interviewing him for the biography book.

Petraeus Affair

In a CBS News interview two months ago she described Petraeus, she said: “He, at the end of the day, is human and is challenged by the burdens of command. So, he has this mask of command — you think he’s really confident — but I got to see a more personal side. He’s confident, but he’s also very compassionate about the loss of troops and sacrifices we’re making in Afghanistan.”

So who will be CIA Director now that David Petraus resigned? Tampa Bay Times reported, “Michael J. Morell, a career CIA officer, served as interim director briefly after Leon E. Panetta left the CIA last year to become defense secretary. Morell was an eyewitness to two major events in recent history. As a CIA briefer, he was traveling with President George W. Bush on Sept. 11, 2001, when news broke of the terrorist attacks in New York, Pennsylvania and Washington. And as deputy CIA director, he was in the Situation Room with Obama on May 1, 2011, when U.S. Navy SEALs killed Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad, Pakistan.”

HEADQUARTERS Central Intelligence Agency

9 November 2012
Yesterday afternoon, I went to the White House and asked the President to be allowed, for personal reasons, to resign from my position as D/CIA. After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair. Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours. This afternoon, the President graciously accepted my resignation.

As I depart Langley, I want you to know that it has been the greatest of privileges to have served with you, the officers of our Nation’s Silent Service, a work force that is truly exceptional in every regard. Indeed, you did extraordinary work on a host of critical missions during my time as director, and I am deeply grateful to you for that.

Teddy Roosevelt once observed that life’s greatest gift is the opportunity to work hard at work worth doing. I will always treasure my opportunity to have done that with you and I will always regret the circumstances that brought that work with you to an end.

Thank you for your extraordinary service to our country, and best wishes for continued success in the important endeavors that lie ahead for our country and our Agency.

With admiration and appreciation,
David H. Petraeus
