Barnes and Noble announced the Nook HD and Nook HD+ tablets are going on sale this week for Mother’s Day.
The 7-inch Nook HD will be on sale for $149 for the 8GB model, which normally costs $199. The 9-inch Nook HD+ which usually runs at $179 for the 16GB model, will be marked down to $169.
Both tablets offer expandable memory via a micro SD card slot. The sale prices will be available online at Barnes & Noble bookstores and on Nook.com. Buyers can also take advantage of this offer by purchasing Nook tablets from Target and Best Buy.
The Nook HD features a 7-inch display with 1440 x 900 resolution, a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, 1 GB RAM and 8 GB internal memory (or 16 GB for the upscale version) with microSD expansion.
The Nook HD+ has a larger, 9-inch screen with 1920 x 1080 display resolution, the same dual-core TI OMAP 4470 processor and 1 GB RAM and 16 GB internal memory (32 GB for the higher-end Nook HD+), also with microSD support.
Both tablets support Wi-Fi connectivity and ship with a mobile platform based on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich – a “pseudo-Android” OS, if you can call it that. Neither device comes with a front or a rear camera.
Barnes and Noble announced in a statement on Friday that they have signed a partnership with Google and will install its Google Play online application store, as well as Gmail, its Chrome Web browser and maps on new Nook tablets. Owners of the latest Nook devices will be able to access the Google services with software updates, the New York company said.
“In recognition that the best gift for Mother’s Day is now even better we’re proud to offer this special limited-time offer for our award-winning 7- and 9-inch tablets,” said NOOK Media President Jamie Iannone in the press release. “NOOK HD and NOOK HD+ are not only beautifully designed, lightweight devices with stunning displays, they now offer customers the most reading and entertainment content we’ve ever offered, at the best prices ever.”
Amazon also announced a discount on the Kindle Fire HD. Customers can purchase the device for only $179 at any store or online. Customers will have to use the coupon code FIRE4MOM to receive the $20 discount; however, it’s not applicable on Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD 8.9.
