Is Twitter Down? Fail Whale Shows Again

is Twitter Down

Is Twitter down? Are you getting the ‘Fail whale’ saying that Twitter is over capacity? You’re not the only one. Seems like the third-parties are having issues as well.

Twitter went down Thursday, January 31 reporting that around 10 a.m. Eastern time “Some users may be experiencing issues accessing Twitter. Our engineers are currently working to resolve the issue.”

Some users saw the “Something is technically wrong” screen, which includes a cartoon drawing of a odd-looking robot missing a claw.

Twitter was intermittently accessible for some users, although tweeting from browsers and buttons on third-party sites often results in the fail whale.

Twitter clients, such as TweetDeck, were affected in the outage. However, tweeting via Twitter’s mobile apps and text message worked for many Twitter users at various times during the outage.

While Twitter did not immediately indicate the cause of the outage, they were updating “several enhancements that make it easier to view photos and videos on Twitter; in particular, on profiles and in search results” yesterday.

Twitter’s last outage was 10 days ago during President Obama’s second inauguration where there was a high volume of Tweets as well as a record attendance. Twitter went on to address the connectivity issue seven hours later.

Twitter use to experience this type of outage all the time in the past, but they have substantially improved their server capacity over the past two years.

Receiving the ‘Fail Whale’ on Twitter is like losing the Internet. People start to freak out and don’t know what to do with themselves.¬†Your “Throwback Thursday” or #tbt photos are going to have to wait.

Have no fear, don’t get mad and just switch to something more productive until Twitter can get a handle on things and fix whatever seems to be broken. Easier said than done.
