Family Guy pulled a major stunt in Sunday nights episode, killing off Brian Griffin, the beloved dog.
The tragedy happened as Brian was preparing to play street hockey with Stewie, Brian’s longtime partner in crime, when he was hit by a car and died from his injuries.
Stewie tried to save his pal by going back in time and preventing the accident, but he had just dismantled his time machine, and was unable to rebuild it before Brian died because he was missing materials.
Brian was replaced by a new dog, Vinnie who is voiced by “Sopranos” star Tony Sirico.
Writer for Family Guy, Steve Callaghan talked about the new character: “Where Brian was sort of a match for Stewie intellectually, Vinny is a good match for Stewie because he doesn’t let Stewie get away with any crap. He’ll call Stewie out on his b.s. freely.”
While Fox has not commented on the death of Brian. Steve Callaghan also talked about the decision to kill off Family Guy’s Brian: “Well, this was an idea that got pitched in the writers room and it sort of caught fire, and we thought it could be a fun way to shake things up. As soon as this idea came up, we started talking about what the next couple episodes could be and we got very excited about the way this change will affect the family dynamics and the characters.”
The dog, Brian Griffin has been on the show for all 11 seasons and his death has sparked fan outrage. One viewer from Alabama has launched a Change.org petition demanding the writers bring the character back to life: “Brian Griffin was an important part of our viewing experience. He added a witty and sophisticated element to the show. Family Guy and Fox Broadcasting will lose viewers if Brian Griffin is not brought back to the show.” The petition has received nearly 2,000 signatures so far.
Maybe this is Fox’s Family Guy media stunt to get ratings back up. Family Guy ratings are down 19 percent this fall compared to last year and the show is on track to have its lowest-rated season since it returned to Fox during the 2004-05 season.
