Extreme Weather Conditions Might Change Minds of Global Warming Skeptics

Extreme Heat Global Warming

For decades now scientist and debates have been circled around the idea of global warming taking effect around the world. With the crazy weather we are having this year, particularly this summer, the idea of global warming seems to gain a lot more attention now. This summer there have been terrible out of control wildfires, countless amount of heat waves, long suffering droughts, some major flooding and even severe storms.

These type of conditions may be the start of global experts have been predicting, although they are not ready to admit it yet, saying that it is much too early to tell if these current conditions are in direct results of global warming. This summer has been loaded with dangerously record breaking temperatures around the United States, over 3,000 record high temperatures were reported last month alone according to MSN.

Two-Thirds of the US population has already been in severe heat weather areas since May 2012. While there are certainly a lot of global warming skeptics the data is starting to add up and make people ask the question, “Are the extreme weather conditions a cause of Global Warming?”

“This is what global warming looks like at the regional or personal level,”Jonathan Overpeckof said who is a Professor of Geosciences and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Arizona.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change actually warned that the United States were on track to have an unprecedented summer of extreme weather and climate events. They knew the possibilities of the type of weather conditions we are having now, as far as disasters go though who knows if they knew of the devastation these climate changes have caused Americans.

The powerful deadly storm that blew across the Chicago area not only caused millions of people affected by power outage as it made it way all the way to Washington, it also took the lives of 20 individuals in the process. According to experts this was not your normal thunderstorm you are accustom of seeing or hearing about in the summer time. Experts mentioned in a statement that the thunderstorm that occurred just last week was actually 5 time more powerful than normal storms according to the associated press.

With these triple digit temperatures scorching the US scientist are saying the US is starting to have vastly more heat records, than cold weather records. Right now the US is having seven heat records to every one cold record, looking forward to the future the ratio may get all the way up to 20 heat record to every one cold record according to the associated press.

“In the future you can expect larger, longer more intense heat waves and we’ve seen that in the last few summers,” NOAA Climate Monitoring chief Derek Arndt said in a statement to the associated press.

The Truth About Global Warming – Science & Distortion – Stephen Schneider

Stephen Henry Schneider (February 11, 1945 — July 19, 2010) was Professor of Environmental Biology and Global Change at Stanford University, a Co-Director at the Center for Environment Science and Policy of the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies and a Senior Fellow in the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment. Schneider served as a consultant to federal agencies and White House staff in the Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama administrations.

His research included modeling of the atmosphere, climate change, and “the relationship of biological systems to global climate change.” Schneider was the founder and editor of the journal Climatic Change and authored or co-authored over 450 scientific papers and other publications. He was a Coordinating Lead Author in Working Group II IPCC TAR and was engaged as a co-anchor of the Key Vulnerabilities Cross-Cutting Theme for the Fourth Assessment Report (AR4) at the time of his death. During the 1980s, Schneider emerged as a leading public advocate of sharp reductions of greenhouse gas emissions to combat global warming.

  3. PEmeritus Professor Dr. John C. Balachandra says:

Global warming is a consequence of two events.

    1) The natural cycle of global trends over millenia.Cooling and warming, due to shifts in the axis of the earth, Volcanic eruptions spewing thousands of tons of volcanic dust into the atmosphere etc.

    2) The exacerbation of the same through wasteful energy policies .Namely inefficient utilization of fossil fuel: mainly in the industrial world. China and India have now joined the band wagon and are forging ahead with their rapid advancement in the economic arena, while polluting the atmosphere , especially in their crowded cities with uncean air.

Remember the era of Charles Dickens, the smog filled London air and the Thames river clogged with filth and dead bodies? How about acid rain and its effects on certain population groups in the world in the past 100 years?

I am a Born again Christain and the Word of God clearly informs us to be responsible custodians of the land that we are blessed with.

We must strike a balance. Though I am a proponent of a strong green energy policy, I realize that we have ample fossil fuel reserves in our land and they have to be used efficiently and wisely so that human beings are not adversely affected, and we are not held hostage by hostile foreign countries blessed with ample fossil fuel reserves.

I am an electrical power engineer with 37 years of experience. California has the largest Solar thermal facility in the world; 364 MW in Southern California, which has been operating since 1988. At night it runs on fossil fuel. The Aussies are building a similar large Hybrid solar thermal system in Ozzieland with government backing.

Since these are in deseart areas, there are no storms that can disrupt their operation. The USA has thousands of square miles of land in Southern California, Nevada, Arizona,New Mexico and West Texas, that can be used for power generation, and with the Extra HV federal transmission system we can power the entire country and have fossil fuel pick up the slack at night.

A solution for downed Distribution lines in cities prone to disasters is to bury the lines underground as they do in Europe. It costs 3.5 ~ 5 times the cost of overhead lines , but in the long run it provides reliable , uninterrupted supply of power, especially during the heat wave we are experiencing, and save hundreds of lives of the vulnerable old, and economically disadvantaged in the inner cities and the rural areas….

Recently 10,000 people died in France due to a heat wave for which they were not prepared to handle!

I have retired and am developing hybrid Biomass solar thermal power stations abroad, and giving back a significant portion of our profits to charity….Having a ball!

God bless, Shalom and Salaam Aleykum …

What I fail to understand is that, no matter what party you affiliate yourself or not, isn’t it the logical thing to do to make our energy resource prospects smarter choices? I mean the original inhabitants lived off the planet successfully working with nature. Although they were not able to accomplish what mankind has accomplished thus far, why can’t we evolve to a smarter society and work with the planet instead of against it? Solar Panels, Wind harvesting, more water energy. Also, wouldn’t investing in green technology not create a new source for investing for even us little guys so we can make a few dollars for a change in the stock market as they open new fields. I just don’t get why we can’t improve our world without so called socialism that so many are against. Smart creative solutions benefit us all NO matter who we represent and should cover all areas of our survival. There but for the grace of God go we.

    • George Douglas says:

During our recent storm, the windmills would have all blown down, the hail would have broken the solar cells, and electric cars would have had no way to be charged. We are in our eighth day of power outages with just the lines down. The coal fired power plant is unharmed. Gasoline and diesel generators are powering half of the state including hospitals, grocery stores, etc. Green energy is a pipe dream by liberals. There may be small applications that will work, but you could cover the entire surface of the USA with windmills and not provide enough power. It took over 6 square miles just to power one Facebook server farm.

  5. Randy says:

This article can be explained by two things: weather and statistics… look them up.

Weather- is cyclical, so it will have warmer and cooler periods.

Statistics- increase the sample (go back farther in time) and no records will have been broken recently.

    SHEESH

AGW must be the cause — The Univ. of East Anglia tells us so. The TOTALLY discredited U of EA that is.

  8. blah! says:

So you take a 100 years worth of data and make a fact even though its less than 1% of time the earth has been around. That’s not a very scientific study. I’m all for a sustainable environment, but this study is crap.

  9. George Douglas says:

The hottest year in the last century was 1933. We had terrible winters just a few decades ago and people were warning of a new ice age. As I sit here at home, 126,000 people are on their 8th day without power here in West Virginia. 44,000 of them are in this county. Access to food is scarce there is no gasoline available many places, and people are sweltering in today’s 102 degree day. There are over 5,000 electric utility workers in the state. We can still get by using gasoline or diesel generators. We can still drive somewhere, if the road isn’t blocked, to seek medical help or food. Big power towers were damaged in the storm. Cell towers were blown down. Just think what it would be like if we had to depend on windmills and electric cars. If you had solar panels, the heavy hail we had would have destroyed all of them. So called “green” energy just is not practical in real world situations such as this. They don’t have to repair the coal fired power plants here. They were not harmed. All they have to do is put the wires back up or repair them. Imagine if they had to ship 50 giant windmills into each community and erect them. First of all they wouldn’t have enough spares and second it would take many months, not a week or two. One volcanic eruption can put out more air pollution in one day than all of man kind can in a year.

    • Michael says:

Hey There George, you made some very valid points that unfortunately, I was aware but had to give second thought, I figure some green technology would still benefit us because over time, we would compensate for problems to deter or prepare for natural disasters. Just like we utilize back up generators, we could offset some of the older technologies with the new technology and not be stuck as we are in utility Monopoly.

Hmm, nice chart, too bad it only mentions the temperatures in the USA and not the world, and that’s the problem. The global warming nutjobs are all american and think that the whole world is just the USA, and they’re all freaking out about the temps going on, even though it is SUMMER after all, not to mention that the Sun’s solar cycle is reaching its maximum right now, and will stay there until next summer. After 2013 the Sun will cool off, and so will the rest of the solar system. The whole gloabal warming agenda was started so that the elite could try to make carbon taxes for everyone to pay, that and Al Gore was butthurt he didn’t get to be president.

But anyway, let’s see some global charts, not just the USA ones that help prop up this global warming propaganda. Otherwise, this is all just more hot air.

  14. T.J.McBearsNY says:

many skeptics are not denying global warming ,they are just questioning if its a result of human actions or natural—this makes since because the planet has already warmed dramatically if one takes into account half of north america was covered by ice just 12,000 yrs ago. It can be compared to Trayvon Martin–we know at one time he was a nice mellowed out kid–that would be before he was 2 years old but then became a cold hearted creep who got what he deserved at age 17.

    • stillcrazy says:

…and dead people can’t defend themselves…. however unarmed and walking in his own neighborhood somebody shoots him dead. Is that right?

Now that somebody… hiding money from the court is known to have been planning to flee with the money he got for defense fund.

Yeah…Zimmerman is the “innocent” one here… right.

    • Zoot says:

Hmmm…let’s parce this. So if A, we know the global warming is occurring, and B, we know that C02 contributes to global warming, and then finally C, humans are producing prodigious amounts of C02 (regardless of A or B), then Trayvon Martin deserves the death penalty for buying junk food. Obviously.

Silly me, I would have thought that the answer would be that regardless of whether or not humans have caused the currently unam******biguous increase in global temperature, then at least we should do everything that we can to make sure it doesn’t get worse, like decreasing our contribution to greenhouse gases.

  15. Jefferson_Lives says:

I’m sure that since the ave temps on Mars have gone up as well…that it must be all those dammed people up their causing the global warming there too…..FAIL

Solar activity and millions of years of fluctuations are responsible for changing temps…world history tells us that climates have changed many times..long before all the people showed up with their evil carbon dioxide…..lol

Or is it more likely that the alarmists just will use any excuse they can find to usher in United Nations authority over the entire planet……BINGO

Just another scam…and a transparent one at that

    • patrick says:

“Or is it more likely that the alarmists just will use any excuse they can find to usher in United Nations authority over the entire planet……BINGO”

Love the lame conspiracy theories… and when crops die… year after year and your food prices go up and Florida sinks under the sea. You’ll still be saying its a conspiracy.

    • pfcgos says:

Fun fact… the earth orbit shifts slightly every so often (talking thousands of years of course) and our orbit temporarily moves closer to the sun. That is why our climate changes every few thousand years. I wouldnt say that mankind has had NO effect on the global climate but I WOULD say that our effect has been negligible.

  16. Phil B says:

The issue for me was never global warming but rather the politicians and extremest who want to capitalize on it. Global warming and global cooling is cyclic, not man made.

  17. Jeff Utz says:

While the heat wave is evidence of global warming, it is far from proof. The melting ice caps, increasing sea level and high average annual temperatures, as well as the physics and chemistry behind greenhouse gases is far stronger evidence.

One thing that is different about the present global warming than that of the past 10,000 years is the rate of warming. It is faster than ever. Considering that and that we know how the greenhouse gases increase temperatures, it is clear that man is causing global warming.

In addition, I want to know the downside of saving energy. Less money spent on energy and more energy independence. Gee, what a horrible downside. And, another thing that goes with increased CO2 in the atmosphere is increased CO2 dissolved in water. And this CO2 dissolved in water (as in the oceans) is increasing the acidity of the oceans, harming coral reefs and other wild life.

The science behind global warming is first-rate, backed up with evidence from many different places and accepted all around the world. The downside to accepting the reality of global warming is increased energy efficiency and energy independence. Gee, I wish the greenhouse deniers would get a clue.

    • Jefferson_Lives says:

Just like man does on Mars right…….uh huh…that’s what I thought

    • Cbinflux says:

      Another brainwashed moonbat.

    • J Kingham says:

Jefferson_Lives please read the below link which describes why Mars is not warming. It provides numerous scientific and peer reviewed papers which show that your statement (opinion) is wrong.

also if you want to look at space to compare climates there to earth, have a look at Venus. Venus had a runaway greenhouse effect which has led to it having a warmer climate that Mercury and therefore has an atmosphere made up primarily of carbon dioxide.

  18. jim lumpkin says:

When the water at my local beach obliterates the beach (a low one to begin with) then I’ll think about global warming. Then I’ll have to decide whether that would be more detrimental or more beneficial. Hmm. More vegetation = more oxygen More CO2 = more vegetation
    Etc.

  19. Marco says:

As you can see by the chart, it’s cyclical. Gets warmer, gets cooler, in 20 to 40 year periods. One very hot summer (matching with a cycle peak in sun spot activity) is not the smoking gun of global warming. It is this short-term trend in geologic time, warming? Could be – need another 50 years to tell. Could just as easily trend colder again in 20 – 30 years. But, is global warming man made, and should we throw millions of dollars at Al Gore’s carbon trading exchange – just so he can buy another private jet, and another 40,000 square foot mansion on the beach? Don’t think so. Lot’s of scientists think that the increase in carbon in the atmosphere is a PRODUCT of warming, not a cause of warming. In fact, if you take a chart showing the increase and decrease in solar activity for that same time span as the temp chart in this article, it matches exactly. Ladies and Gentlemen, we are at the mercy of the Sun. If it increases activity, the earth warms up, if it decreases activity, the earth cools down. Taxing industry to pay for the natural increase in carbon, due to natural uncontrollable solar phenomena, will not “save” the planet, it will bankrupt it, kill the world economy, and not impact the warming and/or cooling of the planet in the least. This in not rocket science people!.

    • Colorado Jack says:

“Lot’s of scientists think that the increase in carbon in the atmosphere is a PRODUCT of warming, not a cause of warming.”

Really? Name three. Only people with PH.D.’s in climatology, geophysics, and related subjects, please.

    • J Kingham says:

“Do you think human activity is a significant contributing factor in changing mean global temperatures?” (Doran 2009) 97.5% of climatologists actively publishing in the field of climate change answered yes to this question.

Unfortunately only 58% of the general public agreed with this (mainly due to disinformation spread by politicians, Tv weathermen and scientists being largely funded by oil companies).

A similar study conducted by Anderegg in 2010 had the same findings.

  20. johnny dairs says:

One must remember that the consensus of the leading scientists in the past was a earth centric universe, a flat earth, the man could not fly, and enumerable other examples of fallacious dictums. We should make every effort to conserve energy, use renewal resources and be good stewards of the land. However, the association of climate change and human kinds part is far from open and shut, despite consensus.

    • Joe says:

No, those were religious zealots who insisted that Earth as the center of the universe.

  21. KAtherine Wlash says:

    Sorry. Mastodon. Bones in Alaska.

  22. KAtherine Wlash says:

There is no global warming. England is freezing this summer and had record cold last year. The warm streak in Feb. of last year was at the same time as solar flares.
These warming hysterics are worried that they will lose control of the biggest redistribution sceme in the history of the world. Why are there masts on bone in the ice in AlSka if the world if the earth is not warming and cooling all by itself.

    • Colorado Jack says:

Katherine, even with a clear warming trend, you get periods that are much colder than normal. Just look at the graph at the beginning of the article. The global warming models predict that the weather will become more erratic, and your examples may illustrate that.

  23. chuck says:

what crazy weather you mean its hot in the summer and cold in the winter? what?! no way what a croc. please tell me why this is still news?

  25. Robin Buntam says:

The skepticism is based on ideology. The ideology is rigid and won’t change. Therefore the skeptics (at least most of them) won’t be convinced no matter the evidence.

    • Colorado Jack says:

Facts wil slowly change some minds. Then they will forget they ever thought otherwise. Look at the Iraq War. A substantial majority now say they were always against it.

  26. etrnldrk says:

Frank, have you looked at both parties lately? Neither are who they say they are: one is full of socialists hell-bent on “protecting the environment” and willing to spend us into oblivion to do so, the other is full of socialists who hide behind religion to control the actions of it’s people and are willing to spend us into oblivion in the name of “national defense” (NDAA/Patriot act anyone?).

Get it together, man. Both sides are working towards the same goals: run your life and spend your money. They just use different messages to hit different emotional responses for nearly the same outcome in their blind supporters, while the rest of us intelligent people would love to have some REAL choices instead or red or blue, and push this country into the direction we need it to be going, straight up, no left, no right.

So, when you vote this November, vote based on policy, not party. I will not be voting strictly democrat or republican, I will be voting for independents, libertarians, the odd republican, the odd democrat, and possibly a members of the green party.

Now, back to the topic: I still don’t believe there is enough evidence to prove that global warming is a man made phenomena or if the climate naturally shifts every few thousand years. We simply haven’t enough information or reliable findings that prove the weather is out of the ordinary, simply because the records being broken are of the measurements we’ve been tracking for a little over 100 years. Quite possibly it’s just a weird point we are observing in the now and we will “normalize ” again in a few years.

    • Incredulous says:

“We simply haven’t enough information or reliable findings that prove the weather is out of the ordinary”

Are you able (and willing) to provide ANY references to anything that you consider to be “information or reliable findings”?

Are you saying we don’t have any, or don’t have enough, or that you don’t like what we have? Or is your statement just a flagrant rhetorical power play?

The cigarette companies said there wasn’t enough information to prove smoking was bad for your health, either. It took several decades of 500,000 smoking related deaths per year in the US alone before the “skeptics” finally decided that maybe there was enough information after all.

The only way there is not enough information is if you decide there isn’t and don’t bother looking for it.

“Quite possibly it’s just a weird point we are observing in the now and we will “normalize ” again in a few years:”

So, how do you explain the correlation in the fossil record between atmospheric carbon and global temperature, combined with the fact that atmospheric carbon has spiked tremendously, for no other suggested reason beside man-made causes, in the last 150 years? Too complicated to follow? Or do you just not bother to explain it?

  27. Frank 2 says:

The graph showing contiguous US extreme temperatures is interesting. Also important is what seems to be increased storm intensity. Similar extremes have also been seen elsewhere in the world. The article notes that experts are still not absolutely certain, with some justice. Are we seeing random or cyclical weather extremes? Perhaps. Sadly, scientific certainty may not be realized until the cost of addressing the issue become exorbitant.

An assessment of the relative costs of inaction assuming that the increasing weather extremes are an indication of incipient global warming vs the cost of action assuming that the current weather events are random behavior would be of value.

    • Colorado Jack says:

Scientific certainty? No such thing. It’s the nature of science to be forever tentative, always open to new evidence. The idea that we should wait for “scientific certainty” is just propaganda.

  28. jess says:

I know this is an important topic, but who wrote this? The grammar is horrible!

  29. Hifi says:

No there have not been debates by scientists for decades that have circled around the idea of global warming taking effect around the world. ‘

There is no debate, except by Luddite politicians, and the kind of journalism, which says there is, is part of the problem.

  30. Karen says:

Global warmer or shifting jet stream? Second summer in a row in the Central Valley here in California is enjoying a milder summer.

    • Colorado Jack says:

Karen, it’s not a choice between global warming and a shifting jet stream. Climate scientists think that global warming will cause the jet stream to shift and also become more erratic. How about that?

  31. Eideard says:

There aren’t any scientists who care a rat’s a** about the idjit vote. Know nothings have always been around – usually on their knees behind whichever conservative faction of profiteer might accidentally drop a crumb or two in their direction.

Scientists are busy enough dealing with reality and knowledge. The climate deniers can stick with mumbo jumbo, short-attention-span articles from the news-as-political-entertainment crowd.

And never the twain shall meet.

  32. Ray McDer says:

Yeah . . . and god will save you.

  33. jay blazek says:

The earth has been getting warmer for 10,000 years; glaciers were receding from North America long before man, motors, the car, big oil.

It’t the heartbeat of the sun cycle, don’t they get it?? Look at the Solar flare activity… it coincides with the temps.

    • Ryan says:

Do your research, the solar flare cycle of our sun is a variable of 9 to 14 years. We are currently emerging from a “dormant” part of that cycle, and this is nothing new. Solar flares are not causing higher temperatures, and the luminous output of our sun increases by only 5% over a BILLION years – far too slow to have a noticeable effect in the timescales you assume (pre-industrial society thru present day). To put it into perspective, multicellular life has only been around for ~1 billion years, mammals only 200 million.

I’m sure I’m wasting my time, though, as most peoples’ interest in science these days is only as a scapegoat to shift blame away from the way we live. We can do something about this, but people are greedy and selfish (rightly so, great evolutionary tactics!) and do not want to change their ways. Soon enough, if we do nothing, the environment or our own shortsitedness will take care of the problem.

    • greese007 says:

I think the scientists have already have looked into the solar flare thing, but thanks for the suggestion.

    • Dumas says:

Science can only look back about 1000 years and in that time period the last 20 years have been the hottest by a wide margin.

    • J Kingham says:

Well i don’t know where you get your disinformation from but scientific studies have shown that solar activity and the warming climate do not coincide. Usoskin wrote in a peer reviewed paper in 2005,

“during these last 30 years the solar total irradiance, solar UV irradiance and cosmic ray flux has not shown any significant secular trend, so that at least this most recent warming episode must have another source”.

This source is most likely due to Greenhouse gases (of which Co2 presents to largest problem) and this is scientific consensus of around 97/98% of climate scientists actively publishing in the field of climate change (Doran, 2009)

    • J Kingham says:

      http://www.skepticalscience.com/solar-activity-sunspots-global-warming-intermediate.htm

Here is a link to a website that presents a huge number of peer reviewed scientific papers by numerous climate scientists which disproves your opinion.

  34. Frank says:

Science means nothing RIGHT . VOTE IDIOTS oh I mean Republican.Right Josh.

  35. Josh Bilder says:

Are you serious? Global warming is a scam to sell more green energy products. Just a way to make people buy solar panels and install wind turbines if you ask me. This is a crock of you know what. The only thing is warming is the hot air in this article.

    • Hifi says:

Sure, the powerful solar panel lobby is behind it.

    • J Kingham says:

Surely if more green products are sold this would be good for economic growth of a country and provide jobs for people to manufacture & Install. It will also increase R&D in innovative technologies for energy efficiency & renewable energy. I’m sick of hearing that global warming is a “scam/fraud”, especially when people don’t explain why they think this.
