Billy Joel Setting up Madison Square Garden Residency with Indefinite Monthly Shows

Billy Joel Residence

Billy Joel announced at a New York press conference on Tuesday that he will play at Madison Square Garden once a month for an indefinite future.

“Playing Madison Square Garden is an experience that never gets old,” Billy Joel said. “A show a month at the Garden for as long as there’s demand means more opportunities to connect with music fans and provides a unique and memorable show every time we play here.”

After he spoke, MSG officials unveiled a new Billy Joel MSG logo next to ones for the Knicks, the Rangers and the Liberty. “Billy, having you as our music franchise feels a little like having the Pope as your parish priest,” said MSG Executive Chairman James Dolan. “I’m truly an admirer and I grew up with your music, too, and so I’m thrilled to death.”

Tickets go on sale Saturday to kick off January 27th, 2014 and continues with additional shows on February 3rd, March 21st, April 18th and will also perform on his 65th birthday, on May 9.

It’s unclear when additional shows will be announced, and there is no end date to the residency. Officials at the press conference reiterated they would continue “as long as there is demand.”

He first performed at Madison Square Garden in 1978 and since then, he has played at the venue 46 times. “I said it in ’78, and I’ll say it again, there is no better venue in the world,” he said.

“We’re gonna dust off some stuff. We’re gonna feature more of the album tracks, more obscure songs. We’ll still do some songs people are familiar with and like, but we’re gonna change it up. It gives you an edge,” he said in an interview after the press conference.

He is already scheduled for 4 shows in Florida in January. It’s unclear if he plans on playing shows outside of New York City once the residency begins.

Billy Joel will perform at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on New Year’s Eve.

Most artists set up residences in Las Vegas, this is the first time that a major artist has announced such an endeavor outside of Las Vegas.
