Baltimore Ravens Ray Rice Suspended First Two Games of Regular Season

Ray Rice Suspension

Baltimore Ravens running back, Ray Rice has been suspended for the first two games of the regular season under the NFL’s personal conduct policy.

The NFL announced with the two-game suspension, that Rice will also be fined a third game check. Rice was fined $58,000 and he will forfeit nearly $500,000 of his salary. Rice is paid $235,294 per week during the regular season.

The ban comes after Rice allegedly hit his then-fiancée and now wife, Janay, unconscious in February, in an elevator, in Atlantic City. The couple was arrested on simple assault charges.

A video of the incident eventually surfaced and Rice was charged with felony assault, but he is in a pretrial intervention program and will not serve any jail time.

“As you acknowledged during our meeting, your conduct was unquestionably inconsistent with league polices and the standard of behavior required of everyone who is part of the N.F.L.,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said to Rice in a letter released by the league. “The league is an entity that depends on integrity and in the confidence of the public and we simply cannot tolerate conduct that endangers others or reflects negatively on our game. This is particularly true with respect to domestic violence and other forms of violence against women.”

Rice’s suspension will begin on August 30, 2014. He will be eligible for reinstatement September 12. Rice may participate in all aspects of training camp and preseason games.

According to NFL.com, the suspension will keep Rice out of the lineup for Baltimore’s season-opening Sept. 7 against the Cincinnati Bengals and Pittsburgh Steelers on Sept 11. The running back will be eligible to suit up in time for the team’s Week 3 tilt with the Cleveland Browns.

“It is disappointing that I will not be with my teammates for the first two games of the season, but that’s my fault,” Rice said in a statement issued by the Ravens. “As I said earlier, I failed in many ways. But, Janay and I have learned from this. We have become better as a couple and as parents. I am better because of everything we have experienced since that night. The counseling has helped tremendously.”
