QUINCY, Pa. – Authorities said Saturday that a man in south-central Pennsylvania confronted his wife regarding custody arrangements for their 4-year old daughter, then ended up shooting to death three people, decided to flee with his daughter and was finally found 250 miles away in Ohio.
In citing court records, the (Waynesboro) Record Herald reported that Kevin Matthew Cleeves tried to make contact with his wife on Friday so he could make arrangements to pick up his daughter, Leia, but she did not pick up the phone, so he went to a home in Quincy Township.
Police have said that 35 year-old Cleeves found a man and woman sitting in a car and was ordered to leave after arguing with them. He then shot to death both of them, another woman and then took the girl, authorities alleged.
Though an Amber Alert was issued Friday evening, it was canceled hours later on Saturday when the pair was found Austintown in northeastern Ohio, outside Youngstown. Police said Cleeves was arrested without incident and the child was found unharmed. In a statement said by police, “His 4-year-old daughter was located in the vehicle and was unharmed.”
According to online records, Cleeves has been charged with three counts of criminal homicide in the deaths in Quincy, Pa. When the Amber Alert was issued, authorities stated Cleeves should be considered “armed and dangerous as well as suicidal.”
No attorney for Cleeves was listed in court records. Initially, Pennsylvania Trooper Adam Reed would not disclose the names of the three victims. He said more information about the deaths and their relationship to Cleeves would be released later. That information has now been released and the Record Herald stated the three dead has been identified as Brandi Cleeves, Vincent Santucci and Rosemary Holma. The Herald-Mail of Hagerstown, Md., reported court documents indicate Brandi Cleeves was the child’s mother and Cleeves’ wife.
Chief Bob Gavalier, of the Austintown police, said it was his understanding that Kevin and Brandi were separated and that Santucci was Brandi’s boyfriend and that Holma was his mother. It was announced that more details will be released later Saturday. The Huffington Post said that a detective with the Austintown Township police department in Ohio told The (Chambersburg) Public Opinion that Cleeves was in jail in Mahoning County awaiting an extradition hearing, scheduled for Monday.
