The stepson of Grammy-award winning hip-hop star Usher has died two weeks after the child was injured in a boating accident on Lake Lanier, 40 miles east of Atlanta.
11-year-old Kile Glover was the son of Usher’s ex-wife Tameka Foster Raymond. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Kile died Saturday morning at an Atlanta area hospital.
The boy was run over by a jet ski while being pulled in an inner tube with a 15-year-old girl. The two were flown to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston. Kile was hospitalized with a major brain injury and was soon after declared brain dead.
A friend of the the family reported that Kile was taken off life-support, but later clarified that the he died of heart failure, according to Channel 2 Action News, a local Atlanta news station.
Usher and his ex-wife were in the middle of an ugly custody battle over their two sons, 4-year-old Usher V and 3-year-old Naviyd, when the accident occurred. He has since let up on some of his custody demands, according to media reports.
“The investigation into this incident continues,” DNR (Department of Natural Resources) spokeswoman Melissa Cummings told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Saturday.
The man driving the personal watercraft has been identified as Jeffrey S. Hubbard of Atlanta, according to the incident report obtained by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The DNR has said that Hubbard and the injured children were part of the same group on an outing at the lake.
Alcohol use is the leading contributing factor in fatal boating accidents according to the Coast Guard’s website, however the DNR has ruled out alcohol as a factor in this incident.
Boating accidents cause hundreds of deaths each year. Americanboating.org claims that in 2008, 23% of boating accidents involved personal water crafts such as the jet-ski that struck Kile Glover.
Condolences poured forth from social media such as Twitter and Facebook on Saturday from the likes of Justin Bieber, Toni Braxton, Def Jam co-founder Russell Simmons, singer Eric Benet, and many others. V-103 morning host DJ Frank Ski posted: “CRYING, I Will Miss You Kile!…Sometimes Life Is So Unfair.”
Kile is one of two children born to Tameka Foster and Ryan Glover, her first husband. Glover is president of Bounce TV and a former executive with Turner Broadcasting.
