Over the past decade or so there have been, lets say “Questionable” names given to new born babies, and unique name changes that have occurred among young adults. If I mentioned the name Calvin Cordozar Broadus, Jr. to you would it ring a bell? Well the rapper, producer, and actor is better known for his famous name Snoop Dogg, but that name is in the past after he announced his new name: “Snoop Lion”.
Snoop Dogg, I mean Snoop Lion, has been doing anything and everything a rapper could do since he broke onto the scene in 1993. He has put out over 12 albums, countless amounts of hit songs, and starred in movies such as “Soul Plane”, “Baby Boy”, “Strasky and Hutch”, and “Bones”.
At the age of 40, he has been considered to be on the downhill of his career and “Irrelevant” at times, although he collaborated with Wiz Khalifa in the song Young Wild and Free that still maintains a high ranking on the billboard top 100 and that was almost a year ago.
For Snoop Lion he mentioned that a recent trip to Jamaica made him feel “Born Again”, when he arrived in Jamaica he was still Snoop Dogg however he mentioned at a conference in New York that he connected with Bob Marley’s spirit and now is ”Bob Marley reincarnated” according to the HuffingtonPost.
He never mentioned why he decided to change his name but explained that he visited a temple in Jamaica and the Jamaicans gave him the name Snoop Lions representing the Lion of Judah which is the key religion symbol of Rastafarian, while also given him the Ethiopian name Berhane, meaning light of the world according to Cleveland.
“I feel like I’ve always been part of Rastafarian,” Snoop Lion said. Rastafarian is a famous Jamaican spiritual movement.
The rapper spent 35 days in Jamaica in which his wife actually admitted to seeing him transform but mentioned she was okay with it and accepted this new person he had become. A big sign that showed Snoop Lion changed his ways from Gangsta lyrics about killing and smoking marijuana were the few songs he performed for a small group of Jamaicans. One of his main songs was called “No guns allowed” in which part of the lyrics said “No guns allowed in here tonight, we’re going to have a free for all, no fights”.
Snoop has completely changed his music style and audience as well as he wants to cater his music to families and children.
“Reggae was calling it’s a breath of fresh air for me ,rap isn’t challenging; it’s not appealing.” Snoop said.
Snoop has emerged himself into this new found music so much that he will be releasing an album called ”Reincarnated” which is set to debut this fall.
“As a 40-year-old man, I’ve got to give Children something that’s what you do when you’re wise, I actually feel like I am 19 or 20 years old again,” Snoop Said.
Along with his album dropping this fall, he has also been working on his own documentary that will give a in depth look at his new style of music and different elements of his life. The documentary is set to release in September at the Toronto International Film Festival.
