Everyone in life has battles they must fight in order to move on with their life. The adversity could be job related, overcoming a disease or fighting inner demons; a victory must be accomplished in order to move forward in life. While some victories are permanent, others can sometimes lead to other battles that must be fought.
Unfortunately for Robin Roberts, she knows too well that the cure for one problem can lead to the creation of another. Five years ago, Roberts was diagnosed with breast cancer and after putting up a fight, she became victorious. Now, the co host to Good Morning America must put on the gloves again but is fighting a different form of cancer known as MDS. Though the name is different, Roberts plans on the result as being the same as it was five years ago; victory.
Robin Roberts had to fight for her life five years ago when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She ultimately won that fight but would later find out there was a price for her victory. Sometimes, the cure for one disease could cause a side effect that would manifest itself in the form of another disease or serious medical problem.
I personally can relate to this as when I was younger, I was told I had Stage 1A Hodgkin’s disease and needed to have radiation therapy in the infected area in my neck. Though I was eventually cured, six years later, I had a group of blood vessels form in the area I had my therapy and need to go for spinal cord surgery to save my life. So I can relate to the fact that the cure for one problem can sometimes cause another to occur.
Last Friday, Robin Roberts said goodbye to her co-workers and the audience of GMA as she is taking a medical leave to prepare for a bone-marrow transplant. She has to have this procedure done because she has been told she has MDS, or myelodysplastic syndrome. This disease affects the blood and bone marrow and used to be known as preleukemia. Though statistics of those having this disease may not be good, Roberts says that her doctors insist they don’t apply to her.
When Roberts was battling breast cancer, she had lots of support, including her mother. This time, however, her mother will unable to be in her corner physically to give her support. Last Thursday, she made it to her ailing mother’s home in Mississippi to visit her. Ironically, the visit was actually Roberts saying goodbye to her mother as a week later, she was notified that her mother, Lucimarian Roberts, had passed away at the age of 88. The timing of her death can be looked at one chapter of Robin’s life coming to a close while a new one begins in fighting to beat MDS.
Before taking her leave, Roberts told her viewers that her doctor, Dr. Gail Roboz, assured her that she would be successful in her fight and would make it through and recover well. Also, she assured everyone that she will do whatever it takes not to miss the meaning of how precious life is, even in the midst of battling her illness. She said, “Life provides losses and heartbreak for all of us. But the greatest tragedy is to have the experience, and miss the meaning.” She added that, “I am determined not to miss that meaning.”
In a separate article on ABC News, the GMA’s co host talked about what she has been going through and the importance of being a bone marrow donor. She also thanked her fans and supporters who were there for her five years ago when she battled and overcame breast cancer. Now, she asks once again for support and prayers in her upcoming battle. “When I faced breast cancer, your prayers and good wishes sustained me, gave me such hope and played a major role in my recovery. In facing this new challenge, I ask humbly for more of your prayers and love – as I will keep you in my mine and update you regularly on my condition.”
Love and blessings,
This is one person who gladly wishes Robin good luck as well as my prayers are with you for another successful victory.
